regions of the country, the edition of a diversity guide to common species occurring in
Portugal and an organized tour to the field station of our Research Centre with several

10.1/ Teaching activities
My teaching activities initiated during my PhD, where I taught at several undergraduate courses.
This activity was intensified during my post-doc at the IGC, where I formulated and co-organised
a PhD course in Ecology and Evolution, and developed another at the Champalimaud foundation.
When moving to FCUL, I was immediately integrated in the teams responsible for two Masters,
Biologia Humana e Ambiente and Biologia Evolutiva e Desenvolvimento. In these Masters, I
helped to create two novel courses, “Adaptacao e Ambiente” and “Genes e Adaptação”, the
latter becoming totally under my responsibility in the second year of its existence. Furthermore, I
created a novel class from scratch, “Evolução das Interações Bióticas”, which was merged with
that of “Genes e Adaptação” in the current year, to form a more complete and consistent class.


Organization of new contents of disciplines
1. 2015: The classes “Evolução das interações bióticas” and “Genes e Adaptação” have now
been fused in a single discipline with 6 ECTS. This implies a restructuration of the two
disciplines which is currently underway.
2. 2013-Present: PhD course “Ecology”, within the PhD programme “Integrated Biology and
Biomedicine”, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. This course was created in 2013, with the
aim to provide the students with general knowledge on the ecological and evolutionary
interactions between organisms and their environment.
3. 2010: Msc course "Ecology and Evolution of complex interactions”, within the Msc
“Theoretical Physics”, Universidade Estadual Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil. This course aimed

at teaching how evolution operates in complex networks of interactions. I presented
different ecological modules (predation, competition, intraguild predation, apparent
competition, etc), their ecological consequences, especially for population dynamics, and
how evolution could be integrated (NB: eco-evolutionary dynamics were at their infancy at
the time, hence this course aimed more at highlighting what could be done in this direction
rather than presenting established results).
2009-2014: Msc course “Evolução das interações bióticas”, in the Msc "Biologia Evolutiva e
do Desenvolvimento”, FCUL. This course was created in 2009, with the aim to address the
evolutionary consequences of biotic interactions. Its content aims at integrating classical
studies on the evolution of interactions (e.g., character displacement or early studies on
sexual selection) with very recent progress on those topics, namely within eco-evolutionary
dynamics. As such, the contents of the course are updated every year.
2009-2014: Msc course “Genes e Adaptação”, in the Msc "Biologia Evolutiva e do
Desenvolvimento”, FCUL. This course was created in 2008 by Prof. Dr. Manuela Coelho, but
its content was totally modified in 2009, under my coordination. The aim of the course is to
provide an integrative view of the process of adaptation by natural selection. It start with
the methods to detect changes in allele frequencies associated with adaptation to a
particular environment (e.g. MacDonald-Kreitmann, Tajima’s D) and builds on this simple
scenario to incorporate more complex genetic responses (e.g. multi-gene) and more
complex environments (e.g. with temporal or spatial variation).
2008-Present: “Adaptação e Ambiente”, within the Msc "Biologia Humana e Ambiente”,
FCUL (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Maria da Luz Mathias). In this course, created in 2008, we
present two perspectives on how environmental stresses can affect the adaptation of
organisms. In my section, I focus on the evolutionary responses of organisms, namely to
pesticides and antibiotics, climate change and parasites.
2008: PhD course “Evolution and Learning”, with Dr. Marta Moita and Dr. Rosalina
Fonseca, within the PhD programme “International Neuroscience Doctoral Programme”,
Champalimaud Foundation. In this course, we aimed at building bridges between the
disciplines of Evolutionary Biology and Neurosciences. We selected a common topic and
invited one researcher from each discipline to tackle the same issue.
2007: PhD course “Systems biology – Ecology and Evolution”, with Dr. Marta Moita, within
the PhD programme “PhD programme of the IGC”, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. With
this course, we aimed at providing an integrative view of the study of Biology, with
emphasis in Evolution. We did this using two approaches: (1) we selected a topic, namely
the evolution of resistance to pesticides, and tackled it from several viewpoints, from
molecular biology to mathematical modelling, with the aim to show how an integration of
disciplines can provide novel insights, and (2) we selected a phenomenon, namely
frequency dependence, and showed how it could be used in several contexts.
Practical classes
1. 2015: Msc course “Genes e Adaptação”. Within this new formulation of the discipline, the
students will perform a 6-week research project. The practical classes are merged with those
of Evolução Experimental (coordinator: Dr. Margarida Matos), hence half the students go to
M. Matos’ lab, the other half to my lab, where they develop two projects. This is currently
underway, with great enthusiasm from the students, my group and myself.
2. 2013-Present: 2nd year course “Evolution”, within the graduation in Biology (tronco comum),
FCUL, University of Lisbon (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Manuela Coelho). In these classes, the
students have to identify a topic in which Evolutionary Biology is important for society, then

they have to present the results of their research. This exercise aims to (a) provide them
with some independence and search methodology, (b) force them to specify what they
conceive as being Evolution by Natural Selection (c) make them realize that Evolutionary
Biology is important for society.
