Vectors – II
Name ______________________ Period ___
Resolution: Resolve the following vectors into its vertical (y) and horizontal (x) components.
10 m at 60o S of E
40 m/s at 37o
16 N due S
12 N; 32o S of W
Determine the resultant: Show all work on your paper.
1. A heavy box is pulled across a wooden floor with a rope. The rope makes an angel of 60o with the floor.
A force of 75 N is exerted on the rope. What is the component of the force vector parallel to the floor?
(37.5 N)
2.
A student exerts a force of 72 N onto the handle of a lawn mower to push it across the lawn. Find the
horizontal component of this force when the handle is held at an angle with the lawn of: 60.0 o ; 40.0o
(36 N; 55 N)
3. An explorer walks 13 km due east, then 18 km north, and finally 3 km west. Determine both the total
distance and the resulting displacement. (displacement = 21 km, 61o, north of east)
4. Three teenagers use ropes to pull a heavy crate across the floor. Kasie pulls with a force of 185 N at 0o.
Ashley uses 165 N of force at 30o while Chris pulls with a 195 N force at 300o. Determine the resultant
force. (434 N, 11.5o south of east)
5. A ship leaves its home port expecting to travel to a port 500 km due south. Instead, a severe storm
comes up and blows the ship 100 km due east. How far is the ship from its destination? In what
direction must the ship travel to reach its destination? (510 km, 259o) Draw this one carefully !!!
Four concurrent forces act on an object as shown: find the resultant Show work.
16N
45o
15N
60o
19N
22N
Steps:
a. resolve each into x and y (+ and –)
b. Find ΣX and ΣY
c. R2 = ΣX2 + ΣY2
d. Θ= tan -1 (Y/X)
6. Two dogs pull on a toy. One with a force of 20 N and the other with a force of 15 N.
a) Diagram this situation showing the maximum resultant.
b) Diagram this situation showing the minimum resultant.
7. The resultant of two forces at right angles is 100 N (Newtons – a unit of force). If one of the forces makes
an angle of 30o with the resultant, compute that force.
8. Two forces at right angles have a resultant of 10 N. If one of the two forces is 6 N, compute the other force.
____ 9. The components of a vector A are such that Ax < 0 and Ay < 0. Is the direction angle of A
a) between 0o and 90o
b) between 90o and 180o
c) between 180o and 270o
d) between 270o and 360o
10. You slide a box up a loading ramp that is 10.0 ft long. At the top of the ramp the box has risen
a height of 3.00 ft. What is the angle of the ramp above the horizontal?
11. A skyrocket travels 113 m at an angle of 82.4° with respect to the ground and toward the south. What is
the rocket’s horizontal displacement?
12. A hot-air balloon descends with a velocity of 55 km/h at an angle of 37° below the horizontal. What is the
vertical velocity of the balloon?
13. A bullet traveling 850 m ricochets from a rock. The bullet travels another 640 m, but at an angle of 36°
from its previous forward motion. What is the resultant displacement of the bullet?
14. An Arctic tern flying to Antarctica encounters a storm. The tern changes direction to fly around the storm.
If the tern flies 46 km at 15° south of east, 22 km at 13° east of south, and finally 14 km at 14° west
of south, what is the tern’s resultant displacement?
