1 Winter 2000, Dr. Hunter Chemistry 506: Final Exam Name:____________________________,________________________________ last name first name Student Number (your social security number): ___________________________ Signature: _____________________________________ In addition to this cover page, this midterm exam consists of 5 pages of questions for 6 pages in total. Please make sure you place your name (last name first) and your student number (i.e., your Social Security number) in the spaces above and sign on the line. Initial each page in the top right hand corner (i.e. near the page number) in case your exam pages get separated. To obtain maximum credit for each question, show your work in detail. Partial credit for questions will not be assigned if no work is shown. Be sure and indicate the positions and bonding of all atoms! Feel free to use short text explanations to explain your drawings if your pictures are ambiguous. If you have to make guesses, assumptions, etc., write me a short note with your reasoning so I can follow your thinking and assign part marks. You may use molecular models to help you answer questions. Feel free to ask me questions. On those pages where you are given a choice about which parts to answer, please circle those parts you want me to grade. This midterm is worth 200 points out of the 450 for this quarter. /200 2 1. [30 points maximum] For three out of four of the following parts, give an answer in the space provided. Clearly show which ones you want me to grade by circling its letter. Show your reasoning and/or your work. (a) Clearly describe two types of directionally specific and two types of non-directionally specific bonding. (b) Define what is meant by the term Aldopentose and name and draw the structure of one example. (c) Clearly describe how Grain Alcohol, Ethanol, is produced for use in Gasohol and for use by industry. (d) Clearly describe what the tertiary structure of a protein is. 3 2. [40 points maximum] For two out of three of the following parts, give an answer in the space provided. Clearly show which ones you want me to grade by circling its letter. Show your reasoning and/or your work. (a) As completely as possible, describe the structural difference(s) between unsaturated and saturated fats and how these relate to their effects on the body. (b) Clearly describe what the active site and the regulatory sites of an enzyme are and how each influences the enzyme’s reactivity. (c) As clearly as you can, describe what the “Lock and Key” and “Induced Fit” models are and how they relate to how enzymes actually bind substrates. 4 3. [40 points maximum] For two out of three of the following parts, give an answer in the space provided. Clearly show which ones you want me to grade by circling its letter. Show your reasoning and/or your work. (a) What is the chemical structure of a “generic” steroid? What are three of the roles of steroids in your body? (b) Draw the structure of the tripeptide Met-Ala-Ile (where R = CH2CH2-S-CH3 for Met, CH3 for Ala, and CH(CH3)(CH2CH3) for Ile). Give the full names of each of these amino acids. (c) Draw the structure of a typical cell membrane, name its components, and give the roles of each. 5 4. [50 points maximum] Draw the structure of a mitochondrion and then using text and diagrams relate this structure to the details of how the mitochondrion generates ATP. 6 5. [20 points maximum] For each of the following structures or names, give an IUPAC name or draw the correct structure, as required. Put a star (*) on any chiral carbon atoms. (a) N-Methylaniline (b) HC CH HC C C Cl 6. H2 C C CH 2 CH 3 Cl [20 points maximum] For each of the following reactions, fill in the correct product (clearly indicating all atoms around the reacting centers). (a) H C HC CH HC Br2/Fe CH C H (b) H3C HCl C H3C CH 2
