NOTE: The above two textbooks are REQUIRED! You must bring the Literature text to
every class. It is necessary to refer to the literature to participate in class discussions.
Course Objectives: The student will learn the techniques and vocabulary of literary
analysis by reading (actively) all assignments and participating in class discussion. In
addition, the student will write a variety of formal English college level essays (including
a research paper) which will follow the latest MLA guidelines. All papers must follow
the criteria given for college level writing. In addition, ENC 1102 is a Gordon Rule class
which requires the successful completion of multiple essay assignments and college-level
writing skills.
Other Objectives: Think critically and make reasoned choices by acquiring,
synthesizing, and evaluating knowledge. Read, listen, and speak effectively.
Requirements: Fulfill Gordon Rule requirements (do not omit any essay assignments),
have no more than 2/3 absences (possible withdrawal on the 3rd/4th absence), complete
an original documented research paper, complete assigned course work with a “C” or
better.
Valencia Core Competencies/CLAST Competencies: Valencia’s core competencies
are essential to success in college and throughout life. These are to THINK, VALUE,
COMMUNICATE, and ACT. The CLAST competencies are specific skills related to
success in reading, writing, math, and logic. Please refer to the Valencia catalogue for
more information.
E-mailing Instructor: If you need to contact me, please e-mail me through my Valencia
e-mail, but be advised that I do NOT tutor students via e-mail. Also, I do NOT accept
any assignments via e-mail attachment. Please copy yourself on all e-mails to me. Also, I
do NOT use Blackboard.
Attendance and Tardy to Class: Regular attendance is MANDATORY to complete
the goals of this class. Any 3 absences will be the limit for this class if the class meets
twice per week. If the class meets one time per week, the limit is 2 absences. After 2-3
absences, a student may be withdrawn after a conference or other notification (e-mail) by
the instructor. It is customary to notify the instructor via e-mail when an absence is
unavoidable although there are no “excused” absences. The Gordon Rule requires all
essay assignments. You can not “omit” an essay. Make up on essays (NOT on quizzes)
is available if the instructor has been notified 24 hrs in advance via e-mail. NO Late
essays will be accepted without arrangements (through e-mail) with the professor in
advance. The Research Paper and graded Steps can NOT be late. It is not acceptable to
come to class late! Tardiness is disruptive and rude to the instructor and classmates! If
you are tardy within 5 minutes, I will permit you to enter the classroom. If you are more
than 5 minutes late, you may NOT enter the class. Please silence all cell phones and any
other technology BEFORE class starts. NOTE: Withdrawal from class can affect
financial aid and/or visa status.
Extra Credit: I will reward good attendance in the following way: If you attend
EVERY class ON TIME, you will receive 20 points. But showing up on time is not
everything. You must participate actively in class discussions and other specified
activities with the literature book open!
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use of words or ideas belonging to another without giving
credit to the original. Any student who plagiarizes any paper or part of a paper will
receive an “F” in the course. “Accidental” plagiarism is just as serious as any other type.
Office for Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities who qualify for
academic accommodations must provide a letter from OSD, preferably during the first 2
weeks of class. The OSD determines appropriate accommodations. (West Campus: SSB

The Gordon Rule requires a C as a final grade for credit. If your final total points are
“close” to the next grade, I will not “give” you the higher grade. See the note on possible
extra credit.
Research Paper: Your research paper will be 4-5 pages (Works Cited is a separate page
marked page 5 or 6) written about a specific short story you will read in the course. You
will be placed in a lottery with your classmates working on the same story with whom to
share your findings and problems. Still the final result will be solely your work, and you
will be graded only on what you do. In other words, there is no group grade, and all
participants on the same story must have a different thesis statement. No papers will be
exactly alike. In addition, you will use Modern Language Association (MLA)
documentation and style format to incorporate secondary sources (literary criticism,
biography, analysis) into your writing to support your ideas. You will use parenthetical
references throughout the paper to indicate citations which will be listed on a works cited
page. Your research paper must be completed in steps. Please check which steps will be
graded separately from the final draft. It is imperative that you keep up with the research
steps, so you don’t get overwhelmed attempting to do it all at the last minute. NOTE:
You MUST be ready to do the complete draft teacher check on the due date in class. If
you are not ready for the teacher check on the due date, you will lose the points. AND
you may not receive any points for a teacher check for a partial draft!!

Week 5: Lecture: Reading/Analyzing Poetry
Week 6: Poetry—Analysis of selected poems (list given in class)

All final drafts of essays must be typed, double-spaced, Font 12, Times New Roman.

Note: ALL reading assignments and discussion of required work will take place in class
where the student can most easily ask questions to eliminate confusion. If you e-mail me
for assignments because of an absence, I will gladly give you this information. If you
have questions about the assignments, please schedule a conference.
Late Work: Late work is unacceptable! To be considered on time, essay assignments
need to be handed in at the beginning of class on the date due! In an “emergency” I must
be contacted via e-mail within 24 hours of the due date if you need another arrangement.
E-mailing the instructor does not guarantee an extension.
Missed Quizzes: If you miss any of the quizzes, you may not make up these quizzes.
You may schedule other make up work if you e-mail me before the due date or during
the week of the due date.
