Unit III
The Early Modern World
1450-1750(ish)
This unit will cover the shortest span of time we’ve seen so far. It is neither as conceptually
difficult as the Foundations unit, nor is it as overwhelming due to sheer volume of information as the
Postclassical era. That being said, there are a few major developments that you will need to know
very, very well.
To put it simply, this is the period where the balance of power shifts, and Europe is favored
instead of Asia. We will see Europe embrace new ideas, and look to the rest of the world as a source
of potential benefit. This will lead them to explore and colonize a new world, and build new
“relationships” with Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. All of this will in turn give European monarchs
unprecedented wealth and power, and radically change the way Europe sees itself, and its role in the
world.
Essay Questions:
1. What were the causes and effects of the new intensified, globalized, trade networks?
2. Compare and contrast the reactions of different societies to the new “modern” world. (i.e.
European expansionism vs. Chinese isolationism)
