BODC in Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry (SSB) Louise Darroch, Sean Gaffney, Kay Thorne, Juan Brown Major roles and responsibilities National facility concerned with looking after and distributing marine data SeaDataNet International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange GEBCO National near-real time DAC for ARGO and Gliders BODC is one of 6 designated data centres responsible for the longterm curation of NERC data • British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) ‐ Atmospheric science • National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) ‐ Earth sciences • NERC Earth Observation Data Centre (NEODC) ‐ Earth observation • British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) ‐ Marine Science • Polar Data Centre (PDC) ‐ Polar Science • Environmental Information Data Centre (EIDC) ‐ Terrestrial & fresh water science, Hydrology and Bioinformatics • BODC has earned an international reputation for its expertise in the management of marine data • BODC pioneered the ‘end to end’ approach in 1980s International National 36 North Marine Productivity Delta Flume SEA-SEARCH ANDREX MERMAN EDIOS SIMORC ARABESQUE NERC Data Grid ESEAS Argo AMT North Sea Project HUMBOLDT CLIVAR ASCOE OSMOSIS INDIA DIMES Autosub Science Missions PRIME MAIA GEBCO Autosub Under Ice RAPID and RAPID-WATCH NETMAR GEOTRACES BOFS Tide Gauge Network OMEX GLOSS CoFEE UK Ocean Acidification PROVESS WOCE (sea level) EnParDis UK SOLAS SeaDataNet FASTNEt UK WOCE LOIS LEACOAST2 M&FMB Cruise Summary Report (CSR) Provide advice and assistance project scientists [throughout project] Cruise Report to (CSR) • Summarises the data sets generated on a cruise • Detailed description of cruise activities • Required by the Intergovermental Oceanographic Commission Full data management plan (DMP) [3 months prior (IOC) • Used to help obtain future diplomatic clearance in foreign to project] waters On-board cruise data management [each cruise] • Required by United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Cruise Summary Report (CSR) [7 days after each cruise] https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/information_and_inventories/cruise_inventory/ Cruise Report (CR) [6 months after each cruise] https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/information_and_inventories/cruise_inventory/ Assemble data sets into BODC relational database [2014 – 2019] Disseminate data to project members and general public [2015 - ongoing] Produce CD-ROM of datasets [end of project data management ] SQL (structured query language) programming language Pre-defined descriptors WHO? Data set WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? HOW? Search engines e.g. BODC All Data Series app. NERC data discovery service MEDIN • Advice and assistance on data management throughout the lifetime of the project • • • • Metadata and labeling standards Protocols and data delivery formats Cruise summary reports and cruise reports Distribute central metadata (e.g. station events, CTD bottle firings) • Long-term data security (archiving) and quality assurance (quality control) • A common data format facilitates the exchange of data between project members and allows easy comparison to other projects (e.g. FASTNet) • Automated data delivery through the All Data Series app. also facilitates data exchange (see https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/online_delivery/nodb/) • Extensive IT skills. BODC will host the SSB project website • Use of existing infrastructure: • near-real time DAC (gliders) • GEBCO bathymetry • In general, BODC should have a copy of the finalised data as soon after the end of data ‘collection’ as is possible • ‘Collection’ is when there are data values (e.g. the end of a cruise, when data are gathered from an experiment or analysis, data downloaded from instrument etc.) • In depth information on submission available at BODC website (see https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/data_submission/) • Generally submissions include: • Finalised data • Descriptions of parameters and units • Methods (to publication standard) • Information on calibrations Data submitted to BODC adheres to the NERC data policy • Ideally, data should be submitted as soon as possible after ‘collection’. • Central cruise data (e.g. CTD) should be made publicly available straight away where possible although data can be embargoed for up to 2 years to allow scientists time to work up their data • Embargo starts at the time of collection (eg. the end of a cruise, when data are gathered from an experiment or analysis, data downloaded from instrument etc.) • In exceptional circumstances, an embargo period may be extended (eg. PhD-specific data) • Once an embargo period has expired, data are available to anybody for whatever use http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/sites/data/policy.asp WP1 Datasets Expected year of submission CTD and underway from process cruises 6 months after cruise end Other underpinning physical measurements (module 7) 2015 – 2018 Whole shelf and pCO2 cruise data (module 1) 2015 – 2019 Boundary fluxes (module 2) 2015 – 2018 Autotrophs (module 3) 2017 – 2019 Grazers (module 4) 2017 – 2019 Organic matter and remineralisation (module 5) 2017 – 2019 Moorings (module 6) 2015 – 2018 https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/data_submission/ WP2 Datasets Expected year of submission Benthic mesocosm incubations 2015 - 2019 Ship-based flow-through reactor incubations 2015 - 2017 Ship-based and flume experiments 2015 - 2017 Pulse-chase isotopic tracer incubations 2017 - 2018 In-situ observations from cores and dredges 2015/2016 and 2017/2018 Autosub surveys 2017/2018 On-shore perturbation experiments 2018/2019 Benthic landers 2016/2017 and 2018/2019 Sub-bottom profiling 2015/2016 https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/data_submission/ WP 3 Datasets Expected year of submission Benthic in-situ observations 2014 – 2015 Benthic flow-through reactor incubations 2017 Benthic mesocosm incubations 2016 – 2017 Benthic/water column stable isotope tracer incubations 2016 Water column in-situ observations 2014 – 2015 Glider (long-term deployments) 2015 Autosub Long Range (long-range deployments) 2016 - 2017 https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/data_submission/ • BODC are an internationally recognised centre for management of marine data • BODC have wide-ranging experience of managing projects similar to SSB, on an ‘end-to-end’ basis • Data management at BODC facilitates the exchange of quality-controlled and documented data sets within the project community. • BODC are here to help you! • We’re already doing extra ‘added value’ work to allow you to do the science of SSB more effectively • BODC have a range of knowledge and infrastructure to make this happen, such as online data delivery mechanisms, near-real time glider systems, website development, GEBCO, data processing and formats expertise etc. • USE US! We get paid for this and we even like it BODC data manager contacts Louise Darroch ([email protected]) Sean Gaffney ([email protected])
