WHAT ARE EQUIVALENT RATIOS EQUIVALENT RATIOS ARE: Ratios that look different but name (show) the same comparison as the original. EX: 2 = 4 4 8 2 apples to 4 oranges 4 apples to 8 oranges 2:4 4:8 ( the ratio is the same, but there are 2 groups; it doubled) HOW DO YOU MAKE EQUIVALENT RATIOS? There are 2 ways to find equivalent ratios: 1) MULTIPLYING: MULTIPLY or DIVIDE If you want LARGER but EQUAL ratios 4 6 x2 x3 x4 8 12 12 18 16 24 You X’s both the top & bottom number of the original ratio by the same number. You can multiply by any numbers – they DO NOT have to be in a number sequence ( BUT they must go from smaller to larger in value ex: 2,5,10) HOW DO YOU MAKE EQUIVALENT RATIOS? There are 2 ways to find equivalent ratios: 1)DIVIDING: MULTIPLY or DIVIDE If you want SMALLER but EQUAL ratios 12 16 ÷2 ÷4 6 8 3 4 You ÷’s both the top & bottom number of the original ratio by the same number. You can DIVIDE by any numbers –they DO NOT have to be in a number sequence ( BUT they must go from smaller to larger in value ex: 2,5,10)
