8.1 Ratios
Ratio – Compares two numbers using division.
*We can simplify ratios by dividing each number in the ratio by the same non-zero number.
(Just like simplifying fractions!) ALWAYS simplify if possible.
There are 3 ways to write a ratio.
= 1 : 4 = 1 to 4 (all of these ratios are said “one to four”)
Compare the number of stars to the number of moons. Write
the ratio in each of the possible ways. (Simplify if possible)
_____________________________________________
Compare the number of suns to the number of lightning bolts.
Write the ratio in each of the possible ways. (Simplify if possible)

Equivalent ratios – Ratios that have the same value. To find an equivalent ratio, you can
multiply or divide each number in the ratio by the same non-zero number.
•2
=
•2
Multiply each number in the ratio by 2 to get an equivalent ratio.
Equivalent ratios continued…
5 : 9 = ___ : ___
Multiply each number in the ratio by 5 to get an equivalent ratio.
(5•5) : (9•5)
63 : 81 = ___ : ___
Divide each number in the ratio by 9 to get an equivalent ratio.
(63÷9) : (81÷9)
24 to 28 = ___ to ___
Divide each number in the ratio by 4 to get an equivalent ratio.
(___ ÷4) to (___÷4)
Write two ratios that are equivalent to 4 : 3
