In this large vegetable bed will be three different
varieties of root vegetables: Carrots, Radishes, and
Parsnips.
In this large vegetable bed will be three varieties of
lettuce: Bib, Romaine, and Spinach.
There is a parcel of land approximately 12 feet by 40 feet in back of two elementary classrooms
which is not currently being used for any purpose on our school site. This area would be ideal
for a flower and vegetable garden to be maintained by the first and second grade classes. First
grade standards include the life cycle of plants and second grade standards include the study of
nutrition. The first grade class could be responsible for the flower garden and learn the life cycle
of plants first hand while the second grade class could learn about nutrition from seed to salad.
The soil in this proposed garden would need to be turned and have soil amendment added to
ensure a vitamin rich soil ready for growing plants. Some plants could be started from seeds,
some from bulbs, and others from young seedlings. These items could all be purchased from the
local discount garden center. This could be a field trip for both classes. A garden hose would
need to be purchased and a few trowels and a shovel.
The garden would be looked after once a week from each of the classes. During the summer,
since there is summer school at this site, it would not be a problem for the plant manager to water
the plants. In addition, a member from the school beautification committee could volunteer to
check on the plants once a week to make certain they are being properly taken care of during the
summer months. Since none of the plants that will be planted: iris, nasturtium, gerbera daisy,
roses, gladioli, coreopsis, spinach, romaine lettuce, and bib lettuce deplete soil nutrients rapidly,
there will only be the one time cost to amend the soil. Starbucks Coffee which is located down
the street donates coffee grounds which can be used as a natural and environmentally safe
fertilizer.
A fruit and flower garden would enhance our school both visually and academically, providing
students who often don’t have a place to grow their own plants an opportunity to nurture and
closely observe plant life. I look forward to our oral interview later this year.
