PS 309 Grade 5 Chapter 2 Curriculum Map Chapter Title: Divide Whole Numbers Time Frame: September/October (3 weeks) Grade Level and Subject: Grade 5 Mathematics Big Ideas/ Enduring Understandings: Extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations. Number and Operations in Base Ten Number and Operations - Fractions Common Core Standards (see Go Math Chapter 2 for CCLS) 5NBT.6 Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. 5.NF.3 Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a ÷ b). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. For example, interpret 3/4 as the result of dividing 3 by 4, noting that 3/4 multiplied by 4 equals 3, and that when 3 wholes are shared equally among 4 people each person has a share of size 3/4. If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie? Day 2 – Show what you Know, Chapter 2 (Determine Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 Instructional Groups). Day 3 – Lesson 2.1: Place the first digit in the quotient by estimating or using place value Day 4 – Lesson 2.2: Divide 3-and 4-digit dividends by 1-digit divisors. Day 5 –Lesson 2.3: Model division with 2-digit divisors using base-ten blocks Day 6 – Lesson 2.4: Use partial quotients to divide by 2-digit divisors Day 7 – Lesson 2.5: Estimate quotients using compatible numbers Day 8 - Lesson 2.6: Divide by 2-digit divisors Day 9 - Lesson 2.7: Solve division problems and decide when to write a remainder as a fraction. Day 10 – Lesson 2.8: Adjust the quotient if the estimate is too high or too low. Day 11 – Lesson 2.9: Solve problems by using the strategy draw a diagram Day 12 – Chapter review/ summative assessment. Day 13 – Chapter 2 post test Day 14- Exemplar PS 309 Grade 5 Chapter 2 Curriculum Map Go Math!: September/October 2015 (15 days) *Select lessons from Grade 5 chapters 1 and 2 depending on student mastery of grade 4 standards based on the Prerequisite Skills Inventory. There are 21 total lessons in Chapter 1 and 2 of Grade 5, and 14 days in September to review multiplication and division of whole numbers from these units as well as to review fractional concepts from grade 4 (mentioned above). Based on the data from the Prerequisite Skills Inventory select which lessons to use with which students, for added RTI support and grouping. *For remedial groups and enrichment see RTI/Reteach and Enrichment Guides for 5th grade chapter 2. **Use the Chapter Pre-Test and Post-Tests as additional assessment if necessary.
