Mendel to Micro

Answer each of the questions, using complete sentences where there is room.
1. Describe two methods of seed dispersal. (Bill Nye: Flowers)
Animals, wind, water, and insects all contribute to seed dispersal.
2. Using colored pencils:
a. Draw arrows to show examples of self-pollination and cross-pollination on the
appropriate diagram.
b. Label where the eggs and pollen would be located using one of the flower
diagrams.
cross-pollination
self-pollination
3. Gregor Mendel studied many different pea plant characteristics, including pea color.
a) Using colored pencils, correctly color the peas below using the same patterns you
discovered with flower color or plant height.
Green peas are dominant
Yellow peas are recessive
b) Label whether the plants were self-pollinated or cross-pollinated.
P
__Cross___
_self_
pollinated
pollinated
F1
F2
4. What is surprising about the results of the F1 generation? In the F1 generation all of
the peas were the dominate color green.
5. Explain how yellow peas can show up in the F2 generation when there are no yellow
peas in the previous (F1) generation. Use the words dominant, recessive, and
gene(s) in your description. Because the pea plant from the F1 generation had both
dominant and recessive genes some of the offspring ended up with the recessive
genes for the yellow colored peas.
6. For each of the listed parts, identify the number and what the part does.

f) fine focus (#6)
a) eyepiece (#1)
g) nosepiece (#7)
b) body tube (#2)
h) objectives (#8)
c) arm (#3) and base (#11)
i) light source (#10)
7. Put in order these six steps for properly putting away a microscope.
5 Wrap the cord (if microscopes will be put away)
1 Take off the slide
2Put the lowest power objective in place
6Place the cover over the microscope
3Completely lower the stage
4Turn the body tube so it’s over the microscope
8. Match the scientist to the contribution. Choose from:
B) Robert Hooke
C) Anton van Leeuwenhoek D) Gregor Mendel
b after seeing cork cells, gave cells their name
d conducted early genetics experiments called the father of genetics
9. In the space below, use colored pencils to draw a simple cell with a large nucleus. Color
the nucleus LIGHT YELLOW. Draw TWO RED chromosomes inside the nucleus.
10. Draw the process of cell division for reproduction using colored pencils. Refer to your
foldable and label all of the circles.
This type of cell division creates offspring.
11. Draw the process of cell division for growth and repair using colored pencils. Refer to your
foldable and label all of the circles.
This type of cell division creates exact copies.
12. Write the terms matching each of these definitions. Choose from these words:
dominant, genes, genetics, heredity, multiply, ratio, recessive
Heredity
a) passing of traits from parent to offspring
Genetics
b) scientific study of heredity
Genes
c) genetic instructions – Mendel called these “factors”
Dominate
d) trait that was present in Mendel’s F1 generation
recessive
e) form of the trait that seems to recede or hide
multiply
g) what you do to find total magnification
(with eyepiece and objective powers)
ratio
h) a comparison of two numbers
