Station 1 Welcome to the Middle East and the study of Islam! We’ve already visited the Middle East during our discussion of Sumeria, but now we’ll be focusing on the Middle East during and after the life of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. There has been a significant demographic shift in the Middle East since we last visited, so this activity is aimed at helping you take note of this shift. At this station, your task is filling in a map of the Middle East. Each member of the group will need to create their own map. You will find your instructions on the next page. Use pages 192 and 197 to: Label the following: 1. 1. Egypt 11. Madinah 2. 2. Constantinople 12. Makkah 3. 3. Byzantine Empire 13. Baghdad 4. 4. Alexandria 14. Persia 5. 5. Jerusalem 15. India 6. 6. Some estimate Islam enjoys some 1.5 billion followers, which is around 22% of the earth’s population. In order to become a Muslim, one must recite the Shahada, a declaration of belief in the basic tenements of Islam, in the presence of other Muslims. The declaration reads: There is but one God and Muhammad is his prophet. Muhammad is one of the most important figures in the study of Islam and the Middle East. Therefore, your assignment is to research the life of Muhammad. When you have completed your research, create a children’s book that illustrates the most significant pieces of the prophet’s life. The children’s book must be no less than 4 pages and must use plenty of illustrations. Keep in mind that the assignment is to create a children’s book. Be sure to include: the early life of the prophet, the revelations, the Hijra, and his unification of Mecca and Medina. Station 3 When one enters the Ummah, the worldwide Islamic community, there are five basic actions that most Muslims consider obligatory for every Muslim to perform. These actions are collectively called the five pillars of Islam. In this station, your assignment is to research the five pillars of Islam thoroughly. Once you have compiled your research, you must individually complete a chart in which you accompany each of the five pillars with 3 bullet point facts and an illustration. Make sure that the bullet point facts you provide are not anorexic. Below, I’ve provided a suggested format for your chart: Five pillars Prayer Bullet Point Facts Illustration Station 4 As in Christianity, there are several festivals and rituals unique to Islam. Each of these festivals and rituals serve a different purpose and commemorate a different event. In this station, your task is to research the Islamic festival or ritual of your choosing. Once you have completed your research, you must, as a group, create a poster inviting others to join you in your celebration or ritual! Be sure to include: what festival or ritual you have chosen, what it commemorates, how Muslims celebrate, and what the significance is. Also, include illustrations that depict what festival or ritual you have chosen! This website provides you with a list of Islamic holidays, however you may use whatever website you may find: http://www.30-days.net/islam/basics/islamic-holidays/ Station 5 Ever wonder whom you had to thank for Algebra (AlJabr)? Advances in alchemy (Al-Kimia)? Advances in modern medicine (Ibn Sina)? Yes, look no further than the Middle East! The history of the Middle East is rich with contributions to the field of science! In this station, your task will be to complete the chart you’ll find at your desks (individually). Station 6 In the 21st century, over 22% of the earth’s population is Muslim. However, the proliferation of Islam did not occur overnight. There were several groups that facilitated the spread of the Islamic faith. In this station, your task is to research the following groups: The four rightly guided caliphs, the Umayyads, the Abbasids, the Ottomans, and the Safavids. Based on your research about each of these groups, create a chart in which you provide/answer the following: the dates during which these groups prospered, important leaders, their significance to Islam, and their global significance. Below, I’ve provided a suggestion for the layout of your chart: Group Four Caliphs Dates Important Leaders Significance to Islam Global Significance
