Monday, March 14th
Unit 5, Wk. 29, “Town”
Phonics: 9:15-9:30

TW circle the s and explain that this is needed to make the words plural. TW then
write sash, lunch, fox, noise, and words from PB page on board and have SW add
the plural ending to each word. (210l/102) Sw also draw a picture for words. (ex.
Sash/sashes.

a. SW read AR book with partner.
b. SW play tic-tac-toe using words on PB. Page 100. Have students pair with partner
and practice saying the words. SW put a colored tile on each word they are able to
make plural. Sw wins tic-tac-toe once words are covered diagonally, vertically or
horizontally. Have students write the word and its plural form.
c. SW circle the schwas sound words and write them on the line. SW also look for
words that end in le line in people in magazines.(cut and paste under schwa
words.

a. TSW and TW discuss new topic for writing 3B. SW choose a pre-write to use
with for the writing and TW discuss the objectives for the writing. Use rubric for
discussion.
b. Choose topic for writing and review the verbs and adjectives since they are
needed for the writing assignment. Have students give you a list of adjectives to
describe words and make a list of words and challenge students to identify the
verb.

a. Pre-assessment on weight and kilograms. (look-alike questions)
b. Introduce: TW introduce pounds, and kilograms. TW explain that kilogram is a
metric unit used to find how heavy an object is. Hold up a large paperclip and explain
that it weighs about one gram. In their IN notebooks, have students write a list of things
they could weigh using the measurement grams. Ask the class for a few suggestions.
Have groups go on a hunt to find six items they want to weigh using grams. Have them
estimate the weight first, and then write down the actual weight of each item using a
balance and one gram weights.
c. TW discuss kilograms, and how 1 kg = 1000 g. Explain that one kilogram is a little over
two pounds. As a reference, find a book that weighs about 2.2 lbs., one kilogram. Pass the
item around so students can get an idea of what a kilogram weighs. In their IN notebooks,
have the students write what items they would measure using a kilogram. Ask the class for
a few suggestions.
d. Use a balance scale to measure a few objects around the room to see if they are heavier or
lighter than a kilogram. Before measuring each item, have students predict if it will weigh
more or less than a kilogram.
e. Group Activity: SW complete page 516 as group
Homework: Complete weight w.s. and bring in one item that weighs about 1
kilogram.

from “Going to Town” and copy them onto paper and draw pictures in plural form
using the words listed on board (TW list about 10 words for students to make
plural). (ex. fox---SW draw a group of foxes and add –es to fox).
c. SW match antonyms using website
http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/online/antonyms.htm and complete crossword
puzzle using antonyms.

Writing 11:30-11:00

a. TW have students prepare for pre-write by having students give ideas about topic.
SW make outline about Egypt or China (food, inventions, climate, land and
architecture, etc.) have students think of facts learned about each one and discuss
details for each heading on outline (TW use notes on China/Egypt that are
attached in plan folder).

Quick review: Review problem of the day: Adding with estimating and a money
problem. Have students count up the coins on table and write answer on index card.
SW correct answer gets yummy treat or computer time.
a. TW review kilograms by having students show their objects that weigh about 1 kilogram.
Have students describe “what is a kilogram”? Have groups go on a kilogram hunt and
find items around the room that weigh less than, about, and more than one kilogram (use
kilogram w.s & cut each section for each student.) Each student will have separate duties
(ex. find items that are more than a kilogram or less than a kilogram). After items are
found, have students weigh each item with a scale to see if their predictions were correct.
Discuss the worksheet as a class.
b. TW review pounds. Have students think of items that will be measured using
pounds by asking “What object weighs more than a pound”? Give options for
students. Show students objects that weigh a pound or more. Have students find
objects in the room that they think weigh a pound. In whole group have students
measure their items using scale. Have them write down object and write down #
of pounds.
c. Assessment: Have students compare the weight of objects.

with the group work.
c. TW provide a scale to students. TW remind S that there are 16 oz in 1 lb. TW
demonstrate how to read the scale. SW weigh classroom objects on the scale and
record the weight in oz and lb.
d. Assess and Close: TW ask S “Sonja’s jump rope twice as long as she is tall. Does
it make more sense to measure the jump rope in inches or feet?

words wins 10 min. on computer.

each of their names (237b, 113) Have students write their names, cut their name
between each syllable and paste on sentence strip. Make a class chart and have
students place their name under the number of syllables.
d. SW prepare for small group by drawing lines to words on board that is an
antonym or synonym for each word.

with writing time by having the students color the pictures and write the adjective
for each word. (ex. if colored red, then have students write the word “RED”.

*** Weekly Assessment
a.
TW have students look at all the items that we plan to weigh. Have them estimate
on their piece of paper which item is the heaviest and which item is the lightest.
Talk about the items they chose. Write on the board the most popular answer for
the heaviest and the lightest item. Have students take turns weighing some of the
objects. Have everyone write down the weight of the items. After all the items are
weighed have the students look at the weight of the items and put them in order
form least to greatest weight. So the smallest item would go first and so on. Once
students are finished, have students check their estimations to the actual weight.
