World History II – Mr. Clairmont [email protected] Course Rules and Expectations/Syllabus Introduction to this course: Why is it important to study history? It's easy to make the mistake in feeling that the past doesn't matter, since we're constantly told to 'live in the moment' and 'plan for the future'. Studying history, however, teaches us many things about whom we are and where we're headed. Without adequate knowledge of history we're reshaping the world carelessly, and blind to the important lessons that the past has to offer. Everything that's ever happened has had a cause, whether we're aware of it or not, and will also have a subsequent effect, whether we're ready for it or not. History reveals the errors of past human thought and action, it helps us to better understand the creation of political ideologies and religious institutions, and most importantly it helps us come to grip with the human condition and our mortality. The first step toward understanding history is in the realization that we don't have answers to all of history's questions, which is one of the many reasons that studying history is so fascinating!! Goals of the Course This course will establish clear learning targets for students which will ask students to: 1. Examine, investigate, and explain the major events, individuals, movements, forces, and ideas that have contributed to the world in which we live. 2. Provide an historical framework within which to organize this information using charts, graphs, maps, and other graphic organizers. 3. Improve reading, vocabulary, writing skills, and critical and analytical thinking skills through the use of primary and secondary historical documents, and argumentative writing.
