REVELATION: The Time Is Near
Part 88: The Return of the King (part 3)
Revelation 19:16
Sunday, May 4, 2014
“And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF
KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.’”
Revelation 19:16
“These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome
them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are
with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.” Revelation 17:14
The Idea of a King
*a King is both a governing leader and a military leader
*we were created to be submissive to and follow words and
ways of God . . . God is supposed to be our king
Never doubt that God is the ultimate ‘king-maker’
“The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD; He
turns it wherever He wishes.”
Proverbs 21:1
--men rise to be kings at the sovereign will of God
--the character of a man dictates the kind of king he will be
*2 words are inherent to a King . . .
=authority . . . power // right invested in the office of King
--the king holds supreme authority
“My child, fear the LORD and the king, don’t associate with rebels,
22
for disaster will hit them suddenly. Who knows what punishment
will come from the LORD and the king?” Proverbs 24:21-22 (NLT)
=responsibility . . . provide for and protect his people
The Initiation of a King
--the 1st king in the Bible . . . was Nimrod (Genesis 10:8-10)
“[Nimrod] . . . threatened to have his revenge on God if He
wished to inundate the earth again; for he would build a tower
higher than the water could reach and avenge the destruction of
their forefathers. The people were eager to follow this advice of
[Nimrod], deeming it slavery to submit to God; so they set out to
build the tower . . . and it rose with a speed beyond all
expectation.”—Josephus, Jewish Antiquities
Nimrod sets a pattern for future kings
The day comes when Israel rejects God as king (I Samuel 8:5-9)
The Iniquity of a King
“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Great men are almost always bad men.” Lord Acton
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings,
Look on my Works ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
--Ozymandias, P.B. Shelley
The Intent of the King
“And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF
KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.’”
Revelation 19:16
He is the King of Kings
*The title is mentioned in OT in Daniel as
--applied to Nebuchadnezzar
“You, O king, [are] a king of kings: for the God of heaven has given you
a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.” Dan 2:37
--but the intent is, that God (THE King) is the ‘king-maker’
--a title for God
“Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and did homage to
Daniel, and gave orders to present to him an offering and fragrant
incense. 47 The king answered Daniel and said, ‘Surely your God is a
God of gods and a Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, since
you have been able to reveal this mystery.’” Daniel 2:46-47
*The NT uses this same title for Jesus
--we see it 3x . . . I Timothy 6:15, Revelation 17:14, 19:16
--all 3 identify Jesus as King of kings in the context of the END
