Study Guide # 8 – Scoffers in The Last Days
VIII.
That the doctrine of the world's conversion and temporal millennium is a fable of these last
days, calculated to lull men into a state of carnal security, and cause them to be overtaken by the
great day of the Lord as by a thief in the night; that the second coming of Christ is to precede,
not follow, the millennium; for until the Lord appears the papal power, with all its abominations, is to continue, the wheat and tares grow together, and evil men and seducers wax worse
and worse, as the word of God declares.
1. That the doctrine of the world's conversion and temporal millennium is a fable of
these last days,
 Not all men shall be saved – There is a judgment reserved for the wicked.
“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with
ten thousands of his saints, (15) To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly
among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard
speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (Jude 1:14-15)
“And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of
the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.”
(Jeremiah 25:33)
“And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty
men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; (16) And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that
sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: (17) For the great day of his wrath is come; and
who shall be able to stand?” (Revelation 6:15-17)

“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)The Millennium – One Thousand Years

Satan is bound for 1000 years, then let loose
◦ “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a
great chain in his hand. (2) And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the
Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, (3) And cast him into the bottomless
pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till
the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”
(Revelation 20:1-3)
The saints reign and live with Christ for 1000 years
◦ “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw
the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and
which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon
their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”
(Revelation 20:4)
At the end of the 1000 years the second resurrection takes place

1. “But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the
first resurrection.” (Revelation 20:5)Thought Questions:What does the apostle Paul mean
when he says “all Israel shall be saved” in Romans 11:26?
2. calculated to lull men into a state of carnal security, and cause them to be overtaken
by the great day of the Lord as by a thief in the night;
 Scoffers in the last day
“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, (4)
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as
they were from the beginning of the creation.” (2 Peter 3:3-4)

The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night
“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a
thousand years as one day. (9) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count
slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come
to repentance. (10) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens
shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the
works that are therein shall be burned up.” (2 Peter 3:8-10)
“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” (Luke 21:34)

Thought Questions:
1. What are other methods that Satan uses to distract people from waiting and watching for the
Lord?
3. that the second coming of Christ is to precede, not follow, the millennium;
 The Millennium – One Thousand Years
It follows the second coming of Christ, described in Revelation 19
◦ “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called
Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. (12) His eyes were as
a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man
knew, but he himself. (13) And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his
name is called The Word of God.” (Revelation 19:11-13)
3. for until the Lord appears the papal power, with all its abominations, is to continue,

the wheat and tares grow together, and evil men and seducers wax worse and worse, as
the word of God declares.
 The papal power – The great whore
“And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto
me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
(2) With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have
been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.” (Revelation 17:1-2)
 The whore – the great city
“And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.”
(Revelation 17:18)
“And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with
violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.” (Revelation
18:21)
 The wheat and the tares grow together until the harvest
“Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. (41) Two women shall be
grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. (42) Watch therefore: for ye know not
what hour your Lord doth come.” (Matthew 24:40-42)
“Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which
sowed good seed in his field: (25) But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the
wheat, and went his way. (26) But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. (27) So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not
thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? (28) He said unto them, An enemy
hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? (29) But he
said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. (30) Let both grow
together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first
the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.” (Matthew 13:2430)
