Multiplication
In the first 6 matches of the season,
a football team scores 4 goals each
time.
If you know your multiplication
tables, this is an easy calculation.
Otherwise, you can work it out
using addition.
How many goals do they
score altogether?
4 x 6 is the same as 6 + 6 + 6 + 6.
Adding: 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24
6 x 4 = 24
To do any calculations like this, it helps if you know your multiplication
tables – or if you can use a multiplication square.
To multiply two numbers,
choose one number from the
top row and another from the
left-hand column.
Follow the first number down
and the second one across.
Their product is where the
two numbers meet.
