Lesson Plan Stage Lead-in+ prediction + preteaching vocab Speaking Pre-teach vocab Stage Aims Tim e Setting 10 context, min getting Ss interested in the topic, predicting what the topic will be, activating schemata, pre-teaching some vocab which can be necessary for the future tasks To brainstorm ideas, to prepare Ss for debates Pre-teach vocab before Ss watch the video to aid understandi ng Procedure T asks Ss if they are hungry or not. Then T suggests a movement activity. T distributes a set of cards (one per each St) with the following food items: Junk food Dairy products Vegetarians Fizzy drinks Meat eaters Protein Healthy Plants Diet Disease Nutrition (for the most difficult words there may be a synonym or a short explanation in brackets) and asks Ss to explain the items to each other randomly exchanging the cards. T: I give each of you a card. On the cards some words are written. You have to explain the words to each other. This is how you are going to do it. (Show)(To a Student): I give you the card and I’ve got the card. I say: Everything we eat. (S answers: Food). Then you explain your word and we exchange cards. Then you go to some other person and explain your new word to him and he… (elicit the future instructions). Try to explain all the 10 words. Ss preteach the necessary vocab to each other, T monitors. Feedback – T asks Ss which words they’ve got and asks for their meaning. T elicits the topic of the lesson and introduces the concept of being FOODWISE. T: So what’s the topic of today’s lesson? (Ss: Food). T: But not only food, what kind of food? (Ss: healthy) T: Ppl who eat healthy food are nowadays often called foodwise. What is being foodwise? T elicits using word-building. Food+wise. 7min T: And if a person is foodwise the most popular trend nowadays is being a… (T elicits vegetarian) What is the main credo of Vegs? (T writes on board). Now you will work in pairs and answer a question Why do people become Vegetarians? You come up with 1 idea, write in on this card and stick it with this magnet to the board (Show). Feedback. T asks Ss to read their pair points and discuss if they agree to each other’s ideas or not. T: Opposed to all vegetarians are people who… (T elicits meateaters) 3min Herbivore – There’s a special name for people who are vegetarians, it’s… What do they eat? (plants) Carnivore – People who eat meat are called… can you guess? Omnivore – Can you guess how we call people who eat both? DNA – T writes on board and elicits the meaning. T: What are you by the way, herbivore/carnivore/omnivore? In Meat Eaters part we will answer the question WHY STAY ONE? T: For that we are going to watch a video where a lady who’s name is Natalie will tell you the reasons for that. Here you’ll concentrate on three main points: (T writes on board) 1. Statistics 2. the Bible 3.Animals closest to us CCQ - Are you writing anything while watching? (Yes) - What question are you answering? (Why stay one) - What points are you concentrating on? Ss watch the video and answer the given questions Feedback: T asks one S to conduct the feedback. T: Can I ask …… to come here? For several minutes he/she is going to be a teacher and he/she will ask you all these questions and write the answers. ….be a kind teacher. Ss answer the questions. T: There’s a great contradiction between these two parties and guess what we are going to do next…? (Ss: debate). T: Yes, we are going to have debates on the topic: LET’S GO VEG! T divides the class into 3 groups: Meat, Veg and We’ll see. The parties write points to support their teams. T: Now we have 2 opposing parties: Meat who say that meat is the best product in the world and Vegs who say that everybody should eat vegetables and go green. I give a piece of paper to each party now and you write as many points as you can to support your party. I give you three minutes for that. While the parties are writing T comes to ‘We’ll see’ team and explains to them that they are the audience who judge the parties, write down the strongest arguments during the debates and in the end give their feedback as to whose arguments were stronger. T explains the procedure of the debates. T: Listen to the procedure of the debates. The first party gives their argument, the opposing one gives a counter argument and the first party can answer to that (scheme on board). So how many counterarguments does each argument have? (2). Then we pass on to the next argument of the other party and do the same. Don’t forget to use these phrases (on the board) I agree to that but… It’s true but… You are right but… Ss have debates. T is a bailiff. Feedback is given by the party ‘We’ll see’. T says the final word and gives homework. HW: prepare a 3-min talk about your favourite food and analyze its (+and –) pros and cons. T: Thank you for the lesson. See you tomorrow. T-Ss S-Ss T-Ss Ss-Ss T-Ss Ss-Ss BOARDWORK Foodwise Vegetarians VS No meat Why become one? Modern Man If you were just to look at current times and just to look at the present diet only about 3 to 4 per cent of … you know…of all societies of all cultures of all countries are vegetarian and even a smaller portion than that, about 1,5 percent are vegan which is strict adherence to only plants based foods and no animal products and no animals whatsoever. So about 97% of the entire population of the world is currently omnivore which is the combination of plant foods and animal foods. So… the fact is that current diet of this world right now is omnivores. That’s not debatable, that’s just a fact of our present diet in the world. And so now we are going to be talking about what actually the diets have looked like in the past. Historic Man Now if you are a historian or a religious scholar you know that scriptures such as the Bible talked about people eating lamb, meat, animal products, so those types of things are in a praise that people have been omnivores in biblical times. And then if you look at Hindi scripture which some historians believe dates back to 2500 BC... In their scripture they talk about not being meat eaters. Now if it mentions not being meat eaters in their religious scripture it sound like to me that obviously there were meat eaters in that time. We are actually gonna go even further back than that, further back from even the recorded history that we have. Prehistoric Man I have an article here written by Dr. John McCartel and he is a vegetarian and he’s also studied apes. And so he has written this article and the title of the article is ‘Humans are Omnivores’. Now if you were to look at DNA our human DNA is actually the most similar to the DNA in pigs and chimpanzees. And guess what? Pigs and chimpanzees are both omnivores – they eat both plants and animals and animal products. And they are opportunistic – so they eat whatever is available whether it be plants or whether it be animals and animal products. As far back as it can be traced clearly the archeological record indicates an omnivores diet for humans that included meat. Our ancestry is among the hunters and gatherers from the beginning. Once domestication of food sources began it included both animals and plants. And then his conclusion was that humans are classic examples of omnivores and all relevant autonomical traits. There’s no basis in anatomy or physiology for the assumption that humans are preadapted to the vegetarian diet. For that reason the best argument in support of a meat-free diet remain ecological, ethical and health-concerned.
