Mongol Debate
Was the Mongol Empire one of the greatest civilizations in world history?
KNOW:
The political, economic, and cultural development of the Mongol Empire from 12001400 CE.
UNDERSTAND:
History is a narrative of multiple perspectives.
The post-classical world is marked by the intersection of civilization, resulting in
divergence and diffusion, cooperation and conflict.
As Western Civilization fell, the East ascended into political, economic, and cultural
dominance.
DO:
Evaluate and debate the success and legacy of Mongol civilization in the scope of
world history.
As our culminating assessment for our mini-unit on the Mongols, you will participate in a debate contesting
the merits of the Mongol empire. There are several steps to prepare for this debate. Follow the worksheet
below to help your team.

STEP I: Create your opening statement.
In the debate, your team must come up with ONE group answer to the appropriate prompt:
Pro: The Mongols were one of the greatest civilizations in world history because _____________.
Con: The Mongols were not one of the greatest civilizations in world history because _____________.
This statement should include all of your speaking points and will serve as your opening statement.
Your group must create your opening statement together!
STEP II: Assign tasks.
Each person in your group will be responsible for articulating 1 supporting point, the rebuttal, or closing
statement in the debate. Assign each person a task below. Some people may have two talking points.

STEP III: Write your talking point.
Your job in this debate is to be as persuasive as possible during your talking point. Your talking point
MUST:
1. Clearly illuminate a reason that supports your position in a topic sentence:
a. The Mongols were great because they conquered the majority of Europe, Asia, and the
Middle East
b. The Mongols were not so great because they were brutal and killed many people.
2. Be at least 2 minutes long.
3. Be at least 1 typed paragraph with as much evidence as possible.
I will collect each person’s talking point at the end of the debate!
STEP IV: Check the persuasiveness of your talking point.
Use the attached rubric to make sure your talking point meets the standard. Also, use the helpful hints
below to make sure your talking point includes:
1. Where your evidence comes from to make the audience trust that you’re not making things up:
a. “The Center for Swift Boat Veterans for Mongol Truth states…”
2. Use data and statistics to prove your point.
a. “1 out of 10 Mongols prefers with Crest Whitening Toothpaste”.
3. Be impassioned!
a. “I don’t think I could exist, if it were not for Mongol civilization.”

To prepare for this debate do not just ask Mr. Google. Use your classmates’ Unit 4 Digital Textbook with
the annotated bibliography. Additionally, collaborate as a group to brainstorm relevant supporting
arguments and share resources to create a compelling argument!
