Fungus like Protists # 5
All fungus like protists are Heterotrophs. They have cell walls like a plant. They use
Spores to reproduce. They are able to move at some point in their lives.
The three types of Protist are: Water molds, Downy mildew and slime molds.
Water molds and Downy mildew: Live in water and moist places. . These organisms
grow as tiny threads that look like a fuzzy covering.
Downy mildew and water molds also attack food crops.
Slime mold: Live in moist soil and on decaying plants and trees. They are beautifully
colored. They move in an ameba like way by forming pseudopods. They feed on Bacteria
and other microorganisms.
During unfavorable conditions, they form a multicellular mass. Spore producing
structures grow out of the mass and release spores which can develop into a new
generation of slime molds.
Plant like Protist (Algae) # 6
All algae share common characteristics with plant: they are autotrophs.
Some algae live in soil, some on the barks of the tree while others in salt water and still
others in fresh water. They are an important source of food for other organisms. Majority
of the earth’s oxygen is made by these algae.
Algae’s come in variety of sizes. Some are unicellular, some are multicellular.
Sometimes unicellular algae come together to form colonies. In that case, some cells
become specialized to do certain tasks.
They come in variety of pigments.
Below is the list of different algae’s and their characteristics.
