To factor means to break down a number into other numbers- when those other numbers are
multiplied back together, you get the original number back. We want ALL of our factors to be prime
numbers: a prime number has only itself and the number 1 as factors.
What are some prime numbers?
One way to show your work for factoring is to use a Factor Tree- like thisFactor 108:
Some people prefer to factor (divide) like this:
Factor 108:
EVEN numbers are easy to start: ALL EVEN numbers divide by ___ .
Let’s factor 12:
After you have factored, pick off all of the numbers at the end of the “branches”So 12 =
Multiples of 5 are also easy- what are some multiples of 5?
ANY number ending in __ or ___ is a multiple of 5.
Let’s factor 45:
After you have factored, pick off all of the numbers at the end of the “branches”So 45 =
For all other numbers, you must first figure out what number we can divide by;
Let’s factor 343:
After you have factored, pick off all of the numbers at the end of the “branches”So 343 =
