Active attendance and participation is required. There is a clear correlation between poor attendance/participation and grades. It is expected that you attend each class session and demonstrate engagement with the course material. Academic debate and discussion is invaluable and we all learn from each other’s perspectives. While I encourage vigorous scholarly debate, there is no tolerance for personal attacks or inappropriate remarks. o Be Polite There will be no assigned seats unless your behavior warrants one. Talking – please do your personal visiting outside of class. You only have 52 minutes a day to learn the information needed to succeed in class this year. Your personal talking not only keeps you from learning, but you sabotage your peers’ learning too. 2 o Be Prepared No hall pass for the water fountain, lockers, restrooms, or phone. Get it or do it before you arrive. You can have a bottle of water in class with you. Bring all needed books and supplies to class daily. Should you need anything from your locker, including water bottles, after the bell rings, you will be marked tardy. Exceptions will be made for emergencies only. No electronics. Before class begins, all cell phones, I-phones or any other electronic devices that ding, bing or buzz must be turned off and securely stored in your backpack. To be truly engaged in the course, one must be present and this includes your body and mind! Failure to comply with this policy will impact your grade. Assignments are to be finished before class begins. Cooperation is expected when given time in class to work on assignments, projects, or activities. Unless there is an emergency or legitimate excuse, late homework will be docked a percentage every day, but will be a zero in the gradebook on the third day. Please plan in advance and pay careful attention to due dates. This allows me to grade in a timely manner. Late work percentages: o Friday: 10% o Monday: 20% o Tuesday: 30% o Wednesday: 0 **Make-up work is given one day per missed day to make up homework. Therefore, if you were absent one day then you have one day to make that work up. If you missed two days, you get two days until I require missing work from you. If I do not get it from you, it goes in the gradebook as an incomplete and will later turn into a 0. o Do not plagiarize or cheat. Plagiarism: to take or pass off as one's own. There is a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism and cheating. Plagiarism or cheating can result in an “F” for the assignment. o I like having fun and will plan for fun things. As long as we do what needs to be done first, we can have fun at the same time. If you have problems or questions, please ask me. I am here to guide you on an exciting adventure throughout the history of the world, and help you succeed to the best of your ability, in class and in life, but the main responsibility is yours. You need to keep up on assignments and complete them on time. This year is going to be grreeaattt!! 3 Problems: o Disagreements Being human, I may make mistakes or have different opinions than you. I do not mind if you disagree, but you may not do so disrespectfully in class. Should you have a dispute, you may come to me individually to speak with me in a respectful manner during break, lunch, or after school. DO NOT make a scene in class, or you will be asked to leave and you will receive a 0 for the day. o Having a Bad Day We all have bad days sometimes. Be respectful of others and others will respect you. If you are having a bad day or other personal problems, please let me know before class begins. I do not need to know details, but please come talk to me. If you do not let me know, I may think you are being disrespectful and you may find yourself in trouble. Although, a bad day is no excuse for bad or disrespectful behavior towards fellow students and teachers. Course Outline: A. 1st Civilizations B. Ancient Greece and Rome C.
