5E Lesson Plan Teacher: Priscilla Garcia Date: 9-25-14 Subject/Grade Level: Mathematics / 4th grade Materials: Handout: Roller Coaster Model Handout: Roller Coaster Recording Sheet and small sticky notes Estimating Sums & Differences Practice Decahedra Dice or Regular Dice (1 per student pair) Handout: Rounding Recording Sheet Handout: Compatible Numbers Activity 1-4 NC SCOS Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives TEKS §111.6. Grade 4, Adopted 2012 4.1.A apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace 4.1.D communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate 4.4.G round to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000 or use compatible numbers to estimate solutions involving whole numbers ELPS.c.1A use prior knowledge and experiences to understand meanings in English ELPS.c.1B monitor oral and written language production and employ self-corrective techniques or other resources ELPS.c.2F listen to and derive meaning from a variety of media such as audio tape, video, DVD, and CD ROM to build and reinforce concept and language attainment ELAR18Aii students write expository and procedural or work-related texts to communicate ideas and information to specific audiences for specific purposes. Lesson objective(s): Students use a number line, rounding rules, and compatible numbers to estimate solutions for whole number addition and subtraction problems. Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs: Reduce number of problems given based on the learner’s abilities. Intervene as necessary. ENGAGEMENT Students use a modified number line model to investigate rounding whole numbers. Students sit in groups of 4 to 5. Students are given the handout: Roller Coaster Model and a transparency is placed on the overhead. They are given sticky notes with numbers so that they are allowed to adjust and discuss the numbers positioning. Students ask themselves “What number goes at the top on the coaster and how do I know?” EXPLORATION Students investigate rounding rules to facilitate finding sums and differences. Students use compatible numbers to estimate sums and differences. Students use compatible numbers to estimate sums and differences in problem situations. EXPLANATION Students will be asked: 1 5E Lesson Plan Why does it make sense to round and estimate? How did you decide to round the numbers? Which computation was easier? Why? How do the actual sums and the estimated sums compare? Can you think of any other things that might fit? Based on what I have written, what do you think the word compatible means? Can you infer what a compatible number might be? Compatible numbers can also be used to estimate numbers. Can you give me some examples of compatible numbers for addition or subtraction? ELABORATION Based on the explanation questions, can you think of examples of life events in which rounding would be useful? Vocabulary: Rounding- a type of estimation with specific rules. Rounding Up and Rounding Down Compatible numbers- numbers that are easy to compute mentally; friendly or nice numbers EVALUATION Students will complete a practice assessment that has rounding to the nearest 10,100, and 1000 and compatible numbers. 2
