Foundation Math 2 (FN-M020) AY 2011-2012 Course Outline Higher Colleges of Technology Common Course Outline Course Title: Foundation Math 2 Course Number: FND M020 Course Credit Units: 3 Weekly Student/Faculty Contact Hours: 0 Catalog Description: This course is the second of two math courses in the New Foundations Studies Program. Foundation Math 2 (M020) focuses on the use of prior foundational knowledge to develop understanding and proficiency in the use and application of mathematical skills and concepts. Course Description: Foundation Math 2 (M020) comprises an understanding and ability of students to examine techniques in reasoning mathematically, solve problems using appropriate strategies, and build on critical thinking skills for any credential program. The Math M020 course involves the integration of conceptual understanding and procedural knowledge in the areas of measurement, geometry, algebra, statistics and probability. Course Content Outline: In order to meet the learning outcomes, students should be given the opportunity to develop in the areas below: Learning Outcome One (LO1) Sub Learning Outcome 01: Identify patterns in sequences of numbers using critical thinking mathematical skills. Sub Learning Outcome 03: Select and use various types of reasoning and methods of proof. Sub Learning Outcome 04: Use Venn diagrams to investigate the relationship between 2 or 3 sets of items. Use truth tables to analyze propositions. Break down an argument into premises (assumptions) and conclusion, and be able to identify logical fallacies. Learning Outcome Two (LO2) Sub Learning Outcome 01: Perform simple percentage calculations. Sub Learning Outcome 02: Use percentages to quantify and describe change. Sub Learning Outcome 03: Apply the concepts of percentage change to real life situations. Learning Outcome Three (LO3) Sub Learning Outcomes 01: Create, read and interpret a range of charts and graphs, including a line chart, bar chart, pie-chart, and scatter gram. Sub Learning Outcome 02: Utilize charts and graphs to convey information to a community, and some of the ways in which these charts and graphs can mislead. Sub Learning Outcome 03: Identify the characteristics of linear graphs; identify the components of linear equations, include slope and y-intersect that are used to create graphs of those equations. Learning Outcome Four (LO4) Sub Learning Outcome 01: Calculate mean, median, mode from an ungrouped data set, and understand and discuss their basic applications in real life situations. Sub Learning Outcome 02: Utilize frequency distributions to analyze the properties of the ‘bell’ curve. Sub Learning Outcome 03: Define standard deviation, confidence intervals, and quartiles/percentile ranks. Learning Outcome Five (LO5) Sub Learning Outcome 01: Calculate simple probability using resulting data to compare likelihoods of events occurring in real life situations (e.g. life expectancy). Sub Learning Outcome 02: Use probability results to analyze and compare risks in areas of daily life (e.g. traffic accidents, smoking, and health). Sub Learning Outcome 03: Apply skills of scientific notation to significantly small probabilities to compare likelihoods of events. Sub Learning Outcomes 02: Apply the concepts of perimeter, area, and volume of simple 2-D and 3-D shapes to solve real life problems. Sub Learning Outcomes 03: Apply the concepts of enlargement and reduction to transform 2-D and 3-D shapes. Sub Learning Outcomes 04: Recognize and apply reflection, rotation, translations, and tessellations in daily life. Instructional Methodology This course requires independent practice and exercise; computer based learning and structures, as well as regular standard classroom delivery. Typical Assignments Class Based Tasks: Reading will be used MATH MN02 for word and story problems, instructions, and written expressions and explanations. Writing is used to explain problems and in word problems. Students are taught strategies for problem solving skills that are scaffold to the learning outcomes of the course. Assessed Tasks: Use of technology is an important part of this course as learning materials and final assessments are computer based. These 1,2,3,4,5,6, assessments should cover a range of mathematical tasks from the course book. This is project based assessment, and does not refer to the traditional meaning of portfolio. This is not participation, attendance, or a teacher's grade. This portion of the assessment is to reflect student math ability. The design, frequency of 1,2,3,4,5,6, grading and administration of the portfolio is a campus decision.
