Chabot College Fall, 2002 Course Outline for Nursing 70 NURSING THEORY: LVN-RN TRANSITIONS Catalog Description Nursing 70 - Nursing Theory: LVN-RN Transitions 1.5 units A review of nursing topics for the LVN who wishes to upgrade to Registered Nurse. Includes the nursing care plan used in Chabot College’s nursing program with clinical applications of the modified Roy Adaptation Model to the steps of the nursing process, principles of therapeutic communication, introduction to the functions of the Board of Registered Nursing, legal-ethical concepts common to the role of the registered nurse, and review of selected psychomotor skills utilized by the nurse in the delivery of health care. Prerequisite: Valid California LVN license and completion of Physiology 1 and Microbiology 1 with a grade of “C” or higher. May be offered in Distance Education delivery format. 1 hour lecture, 1.5 hours laboratory. Prerequisite Skills: Before entering the course, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3 4. 5. 6. apply principles of human anatomy, physiology, and microbiology in the care of clients; use a computer for word processing; name the five rights of medication administration; discuss principles of safety involved in client care; identify what constitutes safe performance in the following nursing skills: a. hygienic care (bed bath, bed making, oral care); b. assessment of vital signs; c. nutritional care, including providing oral and enteral feedings; d. collection of specimens and recognition of findings that are within normal limits; e. handwashing; f. principles of body mechanics; g. positioning/lifting/transferring the client to or from bed/chair; h. observing and documenting intake and output; i. administration of oxygen; j. administration of medications by oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, topical and enteral routes; k. inspection of intravenous sites for proper placement; l. basic principles of surgical asepsis in the 1) application of sterile dressings; 2) wound care; 3) bladder catheterization; m. application of restraints; pass the clinical skills test. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. theoretical outcomes: a. identify the process of change in the LVN who is transitioning to RN status; b. define and describe at least twelve Freudian defense mechanisms used to cope with anxiety; c. assess and differentiate between behaviors of the four levels of anxiety; d. define the fundamentals of the communication process; Chabot College Course Outline for Nursing 70, page 2 Fall 2002 e. f. g. h. i. j. k. l. m. n. o. p. q. 2. identify at least four therapeutic communication principles; describe the basis for using selected interviewing techniques; discuss the implications of ethics applied in health care; differentiate behaviors characteristic of Erikson’s eight stages of psychosocial development; describe the methods used and purpose of values clarification; describe the responses of the body in the three stages of General Adaptation Syndrome; define the unique aspects of professional malpractice; define the administrative standards of the Board of Registered Nursing as they reflect on the practice of nursing and student experiences in nursing; identify the elements of the nursing process; identify major nursing theories; describe the conceptual framework used in Chabot College’s nursing curriculum; incorporate scientific principles from Biology, Physiology, and Microbiology in the nursing care plan; devise a nursing care plan, using the nursing process. clinical outcomes a. demonstrate ability to accurately perform calculations utilized in medication administration and IV drip rates; b. demonstrate ability to safely administer medications via the oral, enteral, topical, intramuscular and subcutaneous routes; c. demonstrate ability to incorporate surgical asepsis in 1) dressing change; 2) catheterization of the urinary bladder; d. demonstrate ability to safely administer enteral feedings; e. demonstrate ability to complete minimum criteria for assessment of the abdomen, peripheral vascular, and integument.
