4th Grade Mathematics and Science October 18, 2010 Unit 4: Algebra 1 Concept 1: Numeric Patterns Learning Standards and Lesson Objectives VSC Standard: 4.1.A.1.a Content Standard: Knowledge of Algebra, Patterns, and Functions Topic: Patterns and Functions Indicator: Identify, describe, extend, and create numeric patterns and functions Objective: 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of numeric patterns by working together in small groups to complete Exploring Numeric Patterns worksheets. 2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of numeric patterns by working independently to complete a Concept Assessment. Assessment Limits Use patterns of 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, or 9 starting with any whole number (0 to 100) Materials During this lesson, students will utilize: Daily Review worksheet, Mad Minute Math worksheet, Exploring Numeric Patterns worksheets, Numeric Patterns Concept Assessment. Motivation In order to motivate my students, I will begin with the Guess My Rule game. In this activity, students will view a number sequence on the board and have to identify the next numbers in the sequence and generate a rule. Objective: Students will improve fluency and demonstrate an understanding of how the use of fossil fuels in the United States compares with that of other nations by reading “Fuels Around The World” aloud. Students are broken into intervention groups based on the results of the first quarter benchmark assessment. Differentiated instruction is based on these groupings, which are homogenous and flexible.
