a.
Admission requirement(s):
Any relevant four-year tertiary qualification. A student has to apply in advance for status to
be granted or an equivalent qualification to be recognised. Depending on the nature of such
equivalent qualification, completion of certain additional subjects may be required.
In addition, a candidate should successfully complete Research Methodology in the first year
of study if it was not included in a previous qualification.
Please note: This qualification is recommended for candidates with a relevant four-year
tertiary qualification other than the Baccalaureus Technologiae: Environmental Management
or the Baccalaureus Technologiae: Environmental Sciences.

Selection criteria:
Selection is based on a personal interview with a departmental selection panel - these
procedures will be fully explained to all prospective students during their personal interviews.
c.
Recommended subjects:
It is highly recommended that the student should have passed relevant environmental subjects
during undergraduate studies and/or completed an environmental-related short learning
programme beforehand.
d.
Duration:
A minimum of one year and a maximum of three years. Students have to re-register annually
for this qualification.
e.
Presentation:
Block-mode classes and Research.
f.
Structure:
This programme consists of subjects offered on a block-mode and a research project in the form
of a mini-dissertation (research report). In order to obtain a structured magister technologiae,
the student has to pass all the relevant subjects and the mini-dissertation (research report) has
to be accepted. The student has to present a colloquium before submitting the dissertation.

A Baccalaureus Technologiae: Environmental Sciences or Environmental Management or
an NQF Level 7 bachelor’s or honours degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental
Management, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Ecology, Botany or Zoology from a South African
university.
In addition, a candidate should successfully complete Research Methodology in the first year
of study if it was not included in a previous qualification.
Holders of any other equivalent South African or foreign qualifications may also be considered,
but will have to apply about six months in advance for the recognition of such qualifications.
Foreign national candidates will be required to submit an evaluation of their qualifications by
the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) with their application forms for admission.
The Faculty reserves the right to assess these qualifications and the applicant’s suitability/
competence for admission to the programme. Proof of English proficiency may be required.
Depending on the nature of such an equivalent qualification, the completion of certain additional
subjects may be required.

This qualification consists of a research project in the form of a dissertation. Before the final
assessment report of the dissertation is considered, a manuscript of at least one scientific paper,
which is a requirement for the degree, has to be handed in. It has to be ready for submission
for publication in a peer-reviewed journal (preferably accredited). The student has to present
a colloquium before submitting the dissertation.

research and approved by the supervisor, should have been submitted for publication to peerreviewed journals (preferably accredited). Written proof that the journals have received the
article(s) has to be handed in as part of the requirements for the degree. The student has to
present a colloquium before submitting the thesis. Students should also successfully defend
the thesis before the degree will be conferred.
