Student Software Tutorials Available on the Web! Software Made Simple’s tutorials cover: ◊ Windows 95/NT4 ◊ Word 97 ◊ Excel 97 ◊ Access 97 These tutorials are available only from campus workstations and labs and can help students learn the basics and beyond of these software applications for academic tasks. View them at: The newsletter for IPFW computer users Com puting & Data Processing Novem ber 1998 6WXGHQW 7HFKQRORJ\ 6HUYLFHV 8SJUDGHV DQG 8SGDWHV OASIS Premiers: Stage One of Three The Registrar’s Office, funded in part by the Lilly Retention Initiatives Grant, has developed Online Access to Student Information Systems (OASIS), a secure Web-based interface for students to access during business hours. As the project moves into its second stage, which is slated for January, faculty will have access to information about their classes and the academic records of students enrolled in their classes. The third stage will allow students to drop/add, and faculty will be able to view student registration and provide credit override. Web Wise On October 1st, 10 MB of Web space per student became available for all students and official student organizations. Over 150 students have already activated their Web space accounts, and many more are expected. You can see two IPFW student organizations sites by going to: www.student.ipfw.edu/~spe www.student.ipfw.edu/~sab Documentation for Web space and working with HomeSite and Netscape Page Composer (two Web editing applications available in the labs) is available in the labs or linked on the Web at: http://www.ipfw.edu/cdp/students/web.html Scanners in Labs Image scanning is now available in all IPFW OpenAccess Computing Labs, so students can scan photos and more to incorporate into their researched papers, Web pages, and other university work. Scanners have instructions posted at the station, though students may need to learn a graphics program, like Paint Shop Pro, if they wish to edit the images they scan. www.student.ipfw.edu/docs/webguide/home.htm /HDUQHU&HQWHUHG /HVVRQV Steve Carr “simul-surfs” during the PBS teleconfer- On October 22nd, IPFW participated in a live, "virtual" discussion focusing on the creation of learnercentered environments. Via satellite, three college and university presidents and the telecommunication director of the Western Governor's University presented strategic planning considerations on making learning institutions more "learner centered." The discussion focused on: ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ Creating facilities that integrate the learning process with the rest of a person's life, Developing adaptable programs that anticipate the future, Helping organizations and people assess learning needs and construct educational solutions, and Creating synergistic educational experiences. The event was well attended by a cross section of our instructional community. Those interested but unable to attend may borrow a VHS recording of the program from Helmke Library's circulation desk. The program also has a web site with excellent examples of innovative campus initiatives: http://www.pbs.org/als/scup/ The program was produced by the Society for College and University Planning and distributed through the PBS Adult Learning Service with support from the University of Delaware. Their involvement is greatly appreciated. %LWV %\WHV DQG 5HPLQGHUV DOS/Windows 3.1 to be Discontinued As mentioned in earlier InfoShare issues and on C&DP’s Web site, the dual boot environment in the Open-Access Computing Lab in KT217 will be removed January 4th, 1999. Instructors and students dependent on DOS/Windows 3.1 applications that don’t run in Windows 95 should plan on alternatives before the start of the spring semester. If you need help with this transition, please contact Bill Baden, Coordinator of Academic Computing, at 6202. Registration is required. Please note that strong Windows 95/98 skills (like using the mouse, understanding file management, familiarity with common elements of Windows applications, etc.) are essential for learning Windows applications. Windows 95 /98 Corel WordPerfect License Expiring On December 1st, Indiana University’s license agreement with Corel WordPerfect will expire. Indiana University, while still in negotiations with Corel WordPerfect, has not yet reached an agreement to continue the current contract. The installation option from the network IMENU will be removed, and only what is currently installed on workstations will be legal. When a new version of WordPerfect is released, Indiana University campuses will not be licensed for it. For those who are interested in switching to Microsoft Word 97, there are C&DP Services Short Courses available. Windows 95/98: The operating system behind the applications—this class, (or an equivalent skill level), is strongly recommended as a prerequisite to other courses. Changing Windows 95 Network Passwords If your password has expired, get a temporary password from the Help Desk by going to KT 204K in person with a picture ID. Use the temporary password as your old password while following the steps below. If your password has not expired, follow these steps using your current password at the old password prompt. 1. Click on the Start button in the lower left corner of the screen 2. Select Programs and then the MS-DOS Prompt option 3. At the DOS prompt, enter Setpass 4. At the Old Password prompt, enter your old (or temporary) password 5. At the New Password prompt, enter a new password 6. You will be asked to re-enter the new password The system should respond with password change successful. If it does not, there should be a message of explanation. If the new password was mistyped and the first and second entries didn’t match, follow step 4 again.
