Organic Titanates
Product Information - Tyzor® NPT
Description
DuPont TYZOR® NPT, titanium tetra-npropionate, CAS: 3087-37-4, is a highly reactive
organic alkoxy titanate with 100 % active content.
TYZOR® NPT is a colorless to yellowish organic
flammable liquid. It is very sensitive to moisture.
Main use of TYZOR® NPT is for catalysis, catalyst
manufacture, cross-linking in nonaqueous systems,
surface modification.
TYZOR® NPT is soluble in or miscible with many
organic solvents or products. Examples of solvents
are: aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols,
esters, ketones; (e.g. isopropanol, ethylacetate,
acetone, hexane, heptane, toluene). To prevent
undesired pre-reactions the products must be
anhydrous.

Reactions
TYZOR® NPT reacts extremely fast with water under
hydrolysis forming n-propanol and reactive titanium
oxide hydrate or titanium dioxide. A quick exchange
of alkoxy groups occurs with other alcohols.
TYZOR® NPT can be used as the raw material for
making other titanates containing different alkoxy
groups. It can also be used to make other chelated
titanates by reaction with chelating agents like
acetylacetone, ethylacetoacetate or alkanolamine.
TYZOR® NPT acts as Lewis acid giving fast
catalysis under mild conditions in many applications
such as esterification transesterification,
polycondensation, olefin polymerization (ZieglerNatta), etc. The high reactivity of TYZOR® NPT
enables the interaction with low reactive functional
groups such as OH or COOH groups of polymers,
mineral substrate or metals effecting coating,
adhesion promotion or cross-linking of polymers.
Thermal treatment at > 350 °C or TYZOR® NPT
films or coatings yields TiO2 and can give very thin
TiO2 layers on different substrates such as glass,
minerals, pigments, metals. Surface hardness and the
adhesion properties can be improved.
Applications and Advantages
TYZOR® NPT is an important or essential
constituent in many applications. The applications
listed with advantages are:
• Polymerization (Ziegler-Natta) (PE, PP,
polybutadiene etc.) stereoselectivity, low
pressure, effective process
• Esterification
(Plasticizer, different esters) elimination of
by products, high yield, easy work up
• Transesterification
[(meth)acrylic esters / polyester for different
applications such as fibers, films, UP resins,
paint binder / different esters] mild
conditions, no by products, high yield, easy
work up, low catalyst concentrations
• Amide / polyamide formation
(carboxylic amide, polyamide from
acid/ester) mild conditions, high yield, low
catalyst concentrations
• Coating
(glass treatment: hot end treatment of
hollow glass, iridescence of glass ware,
coating of flat glass; metal, filler, pigment
coating): surface hardness, adhesion

promotion, improved dispersibility ,
coloring effects, heat and light reflection,
iridescence, hydrophobation, corrosion
resistance
• Paints:
crosslinking of paint binders, adhesion
promotion, and binder for high temperature
paints
• Oxides via sol-gel process:
simple process for special oxides as
coatings, glasses or for encapsulating of
different materials.
Functions
• Catalyst: TYZOR® NPT is used as an
esterification or transesterification catalyst
in an amount of 0.01-1 %. The titanate is
often added as the last ingredient of the
reaction components to prevent undesired
pre-reactions. Transesterifications can be
run at low temperatures < 100 °C. Direct
esterifications of carboxylic acids need
temperatures of > 180 °C. For Ziegler-Natta
catalysis TYZOT NPT is frequently a
catalyst ingredient and mainly used in
combination with Mg and Al compounds.
• Crosslinking Agent: TYZOR® NPT can be
used for cross-linking agent by adding it
added to the polymer or resin binder matrix
or solution in concentrations of ~ 0.5 - 5 %.
The reactivity of TYZOR® NPT is so great
that crosslinking may occur immediately.
Depending on the desired outcome of the
reaction, other less reactive TYZOR®
titanate products be a better alternative.
• Coating Additive: Any surface treated with a
dilute solution of TYZOR® NPT will form
titanium dioxide layers when the surface is
heated or exposed to moisture. Thermal
decomposition occurs at > 350 - 600 °C.
TYZOR® NPT is preferably applied by
vapor deposition in a stream of a dry gas or
by spraying on a hot surface of the substrate.
A thin layer of titanium dioxide will form.
By spraying, dipping or brushing of the
substrate from solutions and subsequent
hydrolysis by moisture also TiO2 layers can
also be formed.
• Primer: TYZOR® NPT can be used as a
primer prior to painting or the application of
a coating to increase adhesion of the coating
to the surface. TYZOR® NPT is usually
applied in very low concentrations of ~ 0.15 % in an organic solvent such as
isopropanol. Heating after application to ~
80-100 °C for a short time helps set up the
primed surface to subsequent treatment.
• Surface modifying reagent: Sol-Gels made
by total or partial hydrolysis of TYZOR®
NPT preferably in the presence of chelating
agents or in combination with other metal
alkoxides gives a sol-gel that can be used as
a binder, coating, artificial glass or ceramic.
