Guide relatif à la procédure
d’angioplastie/endoprothèse
coronaire et à la coronarographie.
Votre médecin vous a dit que vous aviez besoin d’un examen appelé
coronarographie. (On appelle aussi cet examen un cathétérisme cardiaque, une «
angio », ou un cathétérisme du cœur). Nous utilisons ici le terme coronarographie.
Qu’est-ce qu’une coronarographie?
C’est une radiographie particulière
du cœur et des artères. On insère
une sonde appelée cathéter dans
une artère (vaisseau sanguin) de
l’aine, du bras ou du poignet. Une
fois que le cathéter est arrivé dans
le cœur, on y injecte un produit
de contraste pour prendre une
image du cœur.

• To see how the heart muscle is pumping
• To measure the pressures in the heart
• To see how the valves in the heart open and close
• To see if the artery(s) in the heart are narrowed (the most common reason
for this test to be done)

This test is a special x-ray of the
heart and its arteries. A tube
called a catheter is put in an
artery (blood vessel) in the groin
area or the upper arm or wrist.
Once the end of the tube is in
the heart, x-ray dye is used to
take pictures of the heart.

Pourquoi procède-t-on à une

Your doctor has told you that you need to have a test called a coronary
angiogram. (This test is also called a cardiac catheterization, an angio, or a
heart cath). We will use the term angiogram.

• Do NOT take your water pills
• Take your heart pills with sips of water
• Do not eat or drink anything after midnight unless the nurse has told you it
is OK. When you are told to stop eating and drinking you will not be able to
eat or drink again until after the test.
On the Day of the Angiogram
**You will need to arrange a ride home and have someone stay with you
the night of your test - DO NOT drive yourself

Please see the back of this booklet for a:
• If you have diabetes, a nurse will give you direction regarding your
medications/insulin
• A nurse will answer your questions about the test
• A nurse will ask you questions about yourself including what pills you are
taking, any allergies as well as explain what pills to take prior to the test
• Bring your Manitoba Health Card
• Bring your bottles of pills with you
• You will have a blood test and an electrical tracing of the heart (EKG)

Préparation à une coronarographie

Le jour de la coronarographie
• Abstenez-vous de boire ou manger quoi que ce soit après minuit, à
moins que le personnel infirmier ne vous ait dit que vous pouviez le faire.
Lorsqu’on vous dira d’arrêter de boire ou de manger, vous ne pourrez rien
consommer jusqu’à la fin de l’examen.
• Prenez vos médicaments pour le cœur avec un petit peu d’eau.
• NE PRENEZ PAS vos diurétiques (médicaments qui éliminent l’eau).

Juste avant la coronarographie
• Il se peut qu’on procède à l’examen en passant par l’aine ou le poignet.
• Le personnel rase ou coupe les poils du côté droit de l’aine.
• On insère une aiguille dans un vaisseau sanguin pour vous administrer des
liquides ou des médicaments (intraveineux).
• On vous amène au local où se déroule l’examen.
• Vous y rencontrez le médecin spécialisé dans les maladies du cœur (cardiologue).
• Le médecin vous explique les risques et avantages de l’examen. Tous les
examens comportent des risques.
• Après avoir répondu à vos questions, on vous demande de signer un
formulaire de consentement.

(intravenous)
• Your right groin will be shaved or clipped by the staff
• Your groin/wrist may be used for the test

• Heart surgery (may include heart by-pass or valve surgery) and making life
style changes and taking heart pills
• Coronary angioplasty/stent and making life style changes, taking heart pills
• Taking heart pills and making lifestyle changes
Here are the options to treat these heart problems:
• Your heart is not working normally, this may include:
- The artery(s) in your heart are narrowed
- The valve(s) in your heart are not opening and/or closing properly
- The heart muscle is not pumping properly
• Your heart is working normally
The doctor will look at the pictures of your heart and discuss the results with
you. The results of your angiogram may show several things:
Now What?
• At one point you may feel a warm feeling; this is normal and will last a few
seconds
• A freezing (local anaesthetic) will be used in your groin/wrist area to numb
the area. You may feel pressure in your wrist or groin where the needle is
inserted - tell the doctor or nurse if you have any discomfort
• You will be awake but a drug will be given to help you relax

• On engourdit le point de ponction à l’aine ou au poignet au moyen d’un
anesthésique local. Il se peut que vous sentiez une pression sur le poignet
ou à l’aine là où on insère l’aiguille. Si vous ressentez un malaise, informezen le médecin ou le personnel infirmier.
• Il se peut que vous ressentiez une chaleur à un moment donné. C’est
normal et cette sensation ne dure que quelques secondes.
Et maintenant?
Le médecin examine vos images du cœur (angiogramme) et en discute avec
vous. Résultats possibles de votre coronarographie :
• le cœur fonctionne normalement;
• le cœur ne fonctionne pas normalement, pour les raisons possibles
suivantes :
- les artères du cœur sont rétrécies;
- les valvules du cœur ne fonctionne pas comme il faut;
- le cœur ne pompe pas comme il devrait.
Traitements possibles de ces problèmes cardiaques :
• médicaments pour le cœur et modification du style de vie;
• endoprothèse ou angioplastie coronaire, modification du style de vie et
médicaments pour le cœur;
• chirurgie cardiaque (pontage ou intervention valvulaire), modification du
style de vie et médicaments pour le cœur.

Qu’est-ce qu’une angioplastie? une
endoprothèse?
C’est une façon de dégager une artère du cœur bouchée ou rétrécie. Cette
procédure permet de réduire vos symptômes cardiaques, comme la douleur à
la poitrine. Nous utiliserons ici les termes angioplastie et endoprothèse.

If you need a coronary
angioplasty/stent, the procedure
may be done right away “or
you may be asked to come
back at a later date”, the option
depends of factors such as your
medical status. The results of
your test will be sent to your
family doctor and/or heart
doctor. Make sure you keep
all appointments and follow
up with your family doctor
preferably within 10-14 days
after your test.
It is a way to open up a blocked or narrowed artery in your heart. This may
help to improve your heart symptoms such as chest pain. We will use the
term angioplasty/stent.

• A stent is a small, spring-like device that helps keep the artery open. The
stent is placed over the balloon that is used for your angioplasty. When the
balloon is inflated the stent expands and is placed in the heart artery. The
balloon is removed and the stent will stay in the artery permanently.
• During the procedure, when the balloon is inflated you may feel some
pressure or chest pain, this is NORMAL and may last a few minutes. If the
pressure or chest pain lasts longer make sure you let the nurse or doctor
know.
• When the balloon inflates, it opens up the narrowed
artery. This will increase the blood flow to your
heart.

En se gonflant, le ballonnet ouvre l’artère rétrécie.
Cette procédure augmente la circulation du sang vers le cœur.
Durant la procédure, vous ressentirez peut-être une pression ou une
douleur à la poitrine au moment de gonfler le ballonnet. C’est NORMAL et
ne dure que quelques minutes. Si la pression ou la douleur à la poitrine dure
plus longtemps, dites-le au médecin ou au personnel infirmier.
L’endoprothèse est un petit dispositif qui fait penser à un ressort et qui
permet de maintenir l’artère ouverte. On insère l’endoprothèse sur le
ballonnet utilisé pour l’angioplastie. Lorsque le ballonnet se gonfle,
l’endoprothèse se déploie et prend place dans l’artère du cœur. Au moment
de retirer le ballonnet, l’endoprothèse reste en place de façon permanente.

• Someone will help you the first time you get out of bed
• A snack will be given to you
• A nurse will be in to check you often. Please let the nurse know if you have
any pain, swelling, bleeding or discomfort at your groin/wrist site
• Do not bend your hip, leg or wrist on the side of your test
• You will be on bed rest for a period of time, your nurse will let you know
when you can get up

• A band-aid is placed where the tube was removed
• The tube in your groin or wrist is removed. Firm pressure is applied over the
groin/wrist till the bleeding is stopped
• You will be taken to a recovery area
Right after:

Enter through the Emergency Entrance or the South Side Doors of the
Hospital closest to the Emergency parking lot. Take the first single elevator
up to the 2nd floor. When leaving the elevator, follow the signs to the Cardiac
Sciences area. It is located down a short hallway and will take you right to
the reception desk where you will sign in. If you become lost, please ask
someone to direct you to the Y2 area.
Directions to Y2 Cardiac Sciences
Reception at St. Boniface Hospital
Cardiac rehabilitation programs offer education and support to patients who
have heart disease. Depending on the results of your angiogram you may
be contacted by staff members from a cardiac rehabilitation program. The
staff will tell you about the program and the services that you can use to help
improve your heart health.
What is cardiac rehabilitation?
• On your first night home have someone stay with you
• Remember, you will need a ride home. Do NOT drive yourself
• If you have had an angioplasty/stent:
- You may spend the night in the hospital or you may go home
- You will be given a prescription for pills. The pills help prevent the artery
from closing
- You will be given a stent card. Carry the card in your wallet. Make sure
you show the card if you go to a hospital
• If you have had an angiogram:
- You may go home after you have been up walking

CONDUISEZ PAS vous-même;
• demandez à quelqu’un de rester avec vous pendant la première nuit à domicile.
Qu’est-ce que la réadaptation cardiaque?
Les programmes de réadaptation cardiaque offrent de l’aide et de
l’information aux patients atteints d’une maladie cardiaque. Selon les résultats
de votre coronarographie, il se peut qu’un membre du personnel d’un
programme de réadaptation cardiaque communique avec vous. Le personnel
vous parlera du programme et des services qui pourraient vous aider à
améliorer votre santé cardiaque.
Comment se rendre à la réception du
programme de sciences cardiaques au service
Y2 de l’hôpital Saint-Boniface?
Rendez-vous à l’entrée des urgences ou à la porte du côté sud de l’hôpital
la plus proche du stationnement du service d’urgence. Prenez le premier
ascenseur isolé jusqu’au 2e étage. En sortant de l’ascenseur, suivez les affiches
indiquant la voie à suivre jusqu’au programme de sciences cardiaques. Ce
service est situé au bout d’un petit corridor qui vous amène directement à
la réception où vous devez vous inscrire. Si vous vous égarez, demandez à
quelqu’un de vous indiquer où se trouve le service Y2.

Liste de vérification des responsabilités du patient
La liste suivante vous aidera à vous préparer à l’examen.
• Demandez à quelqu’un de venir vous prendre à l’hôpital pour vous ramener
chez vous après l’examen. Vous ne pourrez pas conduire vous-même
pour retourner chez vous. Si vous habitez à plus d’une heure et demie de
Winnipeg, vous devrez passer la nuit en ville.
• Demandez à quelqu’un de rester avec vous toute la nuit. Si personne ne
peut rester avec vous, prévenez le bureau du Laboratoire de sondage
intracardiaque en composant le 204 235 3834, ou sans frais, le 1 855 771 1099.
• Prenez vos médicaments selon les directives du personnel infirmier de la
clinique cardiaque.
• Apportez tous vos médicaments dans le flacon d’origine, soit celui remis par
la pharmacie.
• Apportez-vous des pantoufles, une robe de chambre, des articles de toilette
et de la lecture.
• N’apportez aucun objet de valeur (comme de l’argent ou des bijoux).
L’hôpital n’assume pas la responsabilité de la perte de tels articles ou des
dommages qu’ils pourraient subir.
• Enlevez tout vernis à ongles et ne vous maquillez pas.
• Vous pouvez vous doucher et vous brosser les dents le matin de l’examen.
• N’utilisez aucun produit de beauté parfumé (talc, lotion, parfum, eau de
Cologne, après-rasage, etc.) vous-même, et dites aux personnes qui vous
accompagnent de faire de même.
• Dites aux membres de votre famille ou aux personnes qui vous rendent
visite de ne se présenter qu’un à la fois à votre chevet, et de limiter leur
visite à 10 minutes.
• Vous pouvez allumer votre téléphone cellulaire, mais par respect pour les
patients, mettez-le en mode vibration et n’y répondez qu’à l’extérieur du service.
• Apportez le numéro de téléphone de la personne avec qui communiquer
en cas d’urgence.

• Bring a phone number(s) of an emergency contact person
• Cell phones may be turned on, however, for the comfort of our patients, the
phone must be on the vibrate setting and be answered out of the unit
• Tell family members and visitors that visiting is limited to one person at the
bedside at a time for 10 minutes
• Do not use any scented skin products (talcum, lotion, perfume, cologne,
aftershave, etc.) for yourself and your visitors
• You may shower and brush your teeth the morning of your test
• Remove nail polish and do not apply makeup
• Do not bring any valuables (including money and jewellery). The hospital is
not responsible for loss or damage of such items.
• Bring a pair of slippers, housecoat, toiletries and something to read
• Bring all your pills in the original bottles given by pharmacy
• Take your pills as directed by the Nurse in the Cardiac Clinic
• Arrange for someone to stay with you overnight. If no one can stay with
you, notify the Heart Cath Lab Slating office at 204-235-3834 or Toll Free at
1-855-771-1099]
• Arrange for a ride home from the hospital. You cannot drive yourself home.
If you live more than 1½ hours away from Winnipeg, you will need to stay in
the city overnight
