INTRA Programme B.Sc. in Computer Applications The Objective of this degree programme is to produce graduates who: n Have a sound understanding of computer hardware, software engineering and computer programming n Understand the techniques of systems analysis and design and of applied quantitative methods n Are familiar with the use of computer technology with respect to applications such as: computer games, financial services and mobile phone apps n Have an understanding of the ideas underlying areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics and multimedia technology n Have the ability to adapt and keep abreast of the latest technologies and new developments in computing Course Structure The first year is devoted to gaining a strong competence in computer programming and to acquiring essential mathematical and problem-solving skills. In subsequent years students take courses in subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Web Design, Computer Graphics, Operating systems and networking. This gives them the necessary skills to create software and to invent new ways of using it. Examples include web applications, computer games, mobile applications and the software that drives all electronic devices. There is a strong emphasis on practical and team work. Major projects are completed in years three and four and the final year projects are showcased to industry personnel at the Computing and Engineering Expo which takes place annually in May. Work Areas Students from the B.Sc. in Computer Applications will have the ability to work in many computing roles, some of which are listed here: n Software Developer n Systems Analysis n Systems Architecture and Management n Database Systems Development n Localisation and Testing n Desktop support n Website and App Development n IT Training RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE through DCU’s internship programme “INTRA” (INtegrated TRAining) is a mandatory element of the B.Sc. in Computer Applications. Students are required to complete a 6 month INTRA placement at the end of third year, from April to September. Student Availability Students are available for interview from October onwards.
