Midland College Syllabus Spring 2008 RSPT 1213 Basic Respiratory Care Pharmacology (2-0) Course Description: The student will gain an understanding of math, basic terminology and legislation as it relates to pharmacology. Following discussion of the autonomic nervous system, the student will gain a working knowledge of basic drugs used by the therapist related to respiratory care patients. Text, References, and Supplies: Textbook Colbert, B. J., & Kennedy, B. J. (2008). Integrated Cardiopulmonary Pharmacology (2nd). Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Prentice Hall. Course Goals/ Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student will: 1. Define basic pharmacology terms. 2. Discuss drug legislation. 3. Identify accepted drug references. 4. Use accepted drug references. 5. Demonstrate four ways to find drugs in PDR. 6. Differentiate from generic name or manufacturer name. 7. Calculate drug dosages. 8. Describe function of the nervous system. 9. List different parts of the central and peripheral nervous system. 10. Describe various drug administration routes. 11. List drug classifications used in Respiratory Care. 12. List the actions of each drug classification. 13. List the dosages of each drug classification. 14. List the hazards of each drug classification. 15. List the routes of administration of each drug. 16. List clinical uses of each drug classification. 17. Identify, by label, color, bottle or vial, different medications. 18. Prepare selected medications. 19. Administer Respiratory Care drugs to patients. 20. Observe results of medication. Evaluation of Students: Three (3) consecutive hours of unexcused absences or a total of six (6) hours unexcused absences may result in a student receiving an “F” in the course. For qualifications as an excused absence, it is the obligation of the student to notify the instructor as soon as is practical in advance of that class period. If the instructor is not available, leave a message with the Health Sciences Division Secretary at 685-4600 between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. All classroom performance and behavior will be considered academic. A minimum of four (2) test will be given in addition to completing an Asthma Project. You will be expected to complete any and all assignments given throughout the semester. Test questions will come from lecture, reading assignments and homework assignments. Asthma Project The student will prepare an asthma plan for four (4) patients, with each patient in a different category of asthma symptoms. The project should include a treatment plan for maintenance and a treatment plan for exacerbation in each category. This project will count 20% of the semester grade.
