Expression of Interest to Provide a Pilot Cancer Education Programme
Living Well
The Cancer Society of New Zealand (CSNZ) is adapting the Living Well Programme (LWP) to
be delivered by and for Maori. The LWP is one of the support services offered by the CSNZ.
The programme has been shown to have positive outcomes for participants including
enhanced well-being, and increased knowledge and understanding of cancer and its
treatment. Although this programme has been delivered in Aotearoa New Zealand for
several years, Maori participation has remained low and the Cancer Society wants to
address this trend.
CSNZ wants to work in partnership with Maori providers to combine skills, knowledge and
expertise in a collaborative approach to adapt the LWP for delivery by and for Maori. The
pilot is part of the process to adapt an existing programme to make it more useful for
Maori. There has been a pre-pilot trial programme delivered by and for Maori. Evaluation
findings from that programme have helped shape the pilot.
Background
The Living with Cancer Education Programme (LWCEP) was developed by the Cancer
Council Victoria (CCV) and has been regularly reviewed, tested and improved since 1985. It
is delivered to a wide range of participants including minority ethnic groups in Victoria,
Australia and has been successfully translated into several languages. CCV has been
generous in its support of CSNZ and has allowed the programme to be adapted for delivery
in Aotearoa New Zealand. Further modification of the programme to improve Maori access
has been endorsed by CCV.
LWP is for those with cancer and their whanau. It is an educational and support
programme that aims to increase knowledge of cancer and its treatments, encourage
discussion on common concerns and coping mechanisms, and encourage participants to
learn from each other. Sessions are delivered by trained facilitators who have a manual
that sets out the structure of the programme.
The aim of the programme is to help those with cancer and their whanau to:
 Have confidence to discuss common concerns in a safe setting
 Increase their knowledge of cancer and its treatments
 Increase their knowledge of oncology services
 Develop the confidence to ask questions
 Learn from each other
 Build on coping skills – practical, emotional and spiritual
 Learn about support options available, and
 Plan for the future

The programme is run for one two hour session per week, over six weeks. It is for
people with a cancer diagnosis and whanau. The programme will be run by two
trained facilitators in line with the following standards:
1. Facilitators acknowledge that the LWP is a structured, educational
programme originally developed by the Cancer Council Victoria (CCV) and
must be professionally presented;
2. Programmes are delivered in accordance with the CCV LWCEP facilitators’
manual as adapted for Aotearoa New Zealand under CSNZ guidelines;
3. Programmes are delivered by two trained co-facilitators
4. Participants have a pre-programme discussion with the facilitator about
their expectations and needs in relation to the programme;
5. There are preferably 8-16 participants for each programme;
6. The programme is held at a suitable venue which is warm, comfortable,
private and accessible, with access to the necessary equipment;
7. Facilitators de-brief after each session;
