ORACLE DATA WAREHOUSE WITH EMC
SYMMETRIX VMAX 40K
Building blocks deliver scalable performance, capacity,
and data protection choices to meet Big Data challenges
Essentials
Twice the performance and capacity of previous EMC Symmetrix arrays:
• Achieve the fastest response to queries
• Big Data capacity without increasing
storage footprint
Scalable high-speed data loading:
• Realtime business optimization
• Refresh data in shorter update windows
Non-disruptive backup and disaster
recovery (DR):
• Enterprise-class protection for valuable
business and customer data
• Negligible performance impact enables
more frequent backups
Tailorable options:
• EMC SRDF®, TimeFinder VP Snap, and
Data Domain®
INTRODUCTION
Today’s enterprise data warehouses (EDWs) are mission-critical resources, and changing
business requirements require them to address an increasingly higher volume and a higher
velocity of data. Warehouses are transforming into repositories for Big Data as businesses
incorporate more detailed data (volume) and data from new sources (velocity and variety). In
addition, organizations are using business intelligence (BI) tools to create near realtime
analytics to optimize their operations and create new revenue streams.
EMC® Symmetrix® VMAX® 40K series with EMC Enginuity™ builds upon the world’s most
trusted storage array and provides the performance and mission-critical availability to
address the challenges of Big Data in the enterprise data warehouse:
•Powerful: Symmetrix VMAX 40K delivers the highest levels of performance to demanding
EDW and analytic applications. Line-of-business users and BI analysts will experience the
fastest query response and gain insights more quickly. The scalable data loading capability
of Symmetrix VMAX 40K enables more frequent data refreshes and realtime optimization of
business processes.
•Trusted: enterprise-class protection of the data in the Symmetrix VMAX 40K data warehouse can be achieved without significant impact on performance, and multiple protection
options can be tailored to the needs of the business.
•Smart: enhanced management tools enable efficient deployment of mixed workloads on
the same array.
DATA WAREHOUSE DEPLOYMENT EXAMPLE WITH
SYMMETRIX VMAX 40K
This example illustrates how the Symmetrix VMAX 40K can deliver two key capabilities—
performance and data protection—to a 30 TB enterprise data warehouse. The data
warehouse employed an Oracle 11gR2 4-node RAC database, running the EMC DSS workload
toolkit to generate a scalable workload.
•Query throughput scaled as concurrent data warehouse users were added to the workload,
up to 10.7 GB/s for 256 concurrent users.
•Data loading load performance demonstrated linear scalability, up to 3.5 GB/s, as sessions were added for loading data from external tables.
•Enabled by EMC TimeFinder® VP Snap, the database was backed-up under load using
RMAN, with negligible (0.1 percent) impact on query performance.
solution overview
This building block demonstrated near-linear scalability, and query throughput reached 10.7
GB/s when four RAC server nodes were used. Additional RAC server nodes and back-end
drive resources could easily double the query throughput to over 21 GB/s.

Symmetrix VMAX 40K storage arrays provide high performance and scalability for demanding
enterprise storage environments. Built on the strategy of simple, intelligent, modular
storage, the Symmetrix VMAX 40K incorporates a highly scalable Virtual Matrix Architecture™
that enables it to grow seamlessly and cost-effectively from an entry-level configuration into
the world’s largest storage system.

EMC offers tailorable choices for enterprise-class protection of EDW data. In this example,
EMC TimeFinder VP Snap enables the non-disruptive creation of multiple snapshots
simultaneously, on multiple target devices, from a single source device. In contrast to a full
device copy, a snapshot only needs to store the data that has changed on the source device.
Seamlessly integrated with the Oracle RMAN catalog, TimeFinder VP Snap created snapshots
(logical point-in-time images) which provided a 75 percent storage savings and enabled
database recovery times that were correspondingly shorter than a full system restore.
