SAS® In-Database: Deeper Integration between the SAS System and
Database Management Systems
David Shamlin, SAS Institute Inc.
ABSTRACT
SAS® Institute is pursuing innovative new ways to more deeply integrate the SAS® system and database
management systems (DBMSs); this effort is referred to as “SAS In-Database.” The overarching aim of this initiative is
to move more work closer to the data. The goals are to improve overall performance and to create a unified
administration experience across SAS and DBMS environments. This will result in faster business processes and
lower total cost of ownership.
This paper presents the approach being taken to make realize these goals. We will discuss how SAS components are
being reused to run inside database management systems, how these changes relate to the architecture of the SAS
system and the database, and how they affect the workflows of programmers.
