Dear reader,
Welcome to a new edition of Infosylva which mainly reports
on the outcomes of COP20 with relation to the draft
agreement to be discussed at the COP in Paris in 2015. A
solid basis of trust for such a deal has yet to be built, despite
the progress made in Lima concerning all countries’
commitment to act urgently. (In English, Spanish and French)
A new issue of the ETFRN Newsletter, titled “Towards
productive landscapes”, seems to be in line with both the
outcome statement at the Global Landscape Forum and the
opening address at that same Forum by FAO’s Assistant
Director General for Forestry Mr. Eduardo Rojas-Briales
concerning the importance of a landscape approach for
multiple benefits. (In English)
International Mountain Day 2014 was celebrated around the
world including at COP20 in Lima on 11 December, raising
awareness about the importance of mountains for the lives
of millions of people and the opportunities and constraints
regarding their development. (In English, Spanish and
French)
In other news, the first vertical forest in the world is in
Milan, where 2 towers of 27 floors each boast 900 trees and
more than 11000 plants. A ground-breaking achievement in
urban reforestation. (In French)
A call for abstracts for papers, posters and videos has been
launched for the World Forestry Congress, which will be held
in Durban, South Africa 7-11 September 2015. Deadline for
submission is 30 January 2015.
On behalf of Infosylva and FAO Forestry, I send my warmest

Bienvenidos a esta nueva edición de Infosylva que quiere
presentar principalmente los resultados de la COP20 en
relación con el proyecto de acuerdo que se debatirá en la
Conferencia de las Partes en París en 2015. Una base sólida
de confianza para alcanzar ese acuerdo aún no se ha
construido, a pesar de los avances realizados en Lima en
relación con el compromiso de todos los países para actuar

Un nuevo número del Boletín ETFRN, titulado "Hacia
paisajes productivos" (En inglés), parece estar en línea tanto
con la declaración de resultados del Foro Mundial de
Paisajes, como con el discurso de apertura en ese mismo
foro pronunciado por el Subdirector General de la FAO para
el sector forestal Sr. Eduardo Rojas-Briales sobre la
importancia de un enfoque de paisajes para obtener
beneficios múltiples. (En Inglés)
El Día Internacional de las Montañas 2014 se ha celebrado el
11 de diciembre en todo el mundo, incluso en la COP20 en
Lima, para crear conciencia sobre la importancia de las
montañas para la vida de millones de personas y sobre las
oportunidades y limitaciones en cuanto a su desarrollo. (En
Inglés, español y francés)
En otras noticias, el primer bosque vertical del mundo se
encuentra en Milán, donde 2 torres de 27 pisos cada una
cuentan con 900 árboles y más de 11.000 plantas. Un logro
pionero en la reforestación urbana. (En francés)
Está abierta la convocatoria para la presentación de
resúmenes, carteles y vídeos para el XIV Congreso Forestal
Mundial, que se celebrará en Durban, República de
Sudáfrica, del 7 al 11 de septiembre de 2015. La fecha límite
de presentación es el 30 de enero 2015.

La Journée internationale de la montagne 2014 a été
célébrée le 11 Décembre partout dans le monde, y compris
à la COP20 à Lima, dans le but de sensibiliser les gens sur
l'importance des montagnes pour la vie de millions de
personnes et sur les opportunités et contraintes relatives à
leur développement. (En anglais, espagnol et français)
Dans d'autres nouvelles, la première forêt verticale dans le

FAO urges to change the way we think and act in response to climate change

Adopting a landscape approach to address the challenges of climate change is the way to get more
resilient, better adapted and highly productive landscapes that contribute to the livelihoods of
populations now and in the future, said Eduardo Rojas, FAO’s Assistant Director General, during the
inaugural session of the Global Landscapes Forum in Lima.

FAO at the UN climate change talks in Peru
Climate change is already affecting food security and the livelihoods of the world's most vulnerable
people. FAO is supporting countries during COP20 to ensure that linkages between climate change and
food security issues are taken into account during the Conference. Overcoming climate change is central
to achieving a sustainable future for the planet's growing population, and food security must lie at the
heart of that effort.
International Symposium on Agroecology at FAO
On 18-19 September 2014, FAO hosted at its headquarters in Rome a two-day International Symposium
on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition, culminating in a high-level round table which discussed
recent experiences and experiments in the field with agriculture ministers from several countries.

Mountain Partnership: Celebrating Mountains on 11 December
Mountains provide food, shelter and income to people around the world, and are celebrated every year
on 11 December, International Mountain Day. In this 3-minute video, produced by the Mountain

The path to sustainable forestry in Russia's Far East
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are working together to promote viable forestry investment in

New FAO publications
Contribution of the Forestry Sector to National Economies, 1990-2011
The contribution of the forestry sector to national economies is one dimension of sustainable forest
management and information about this is needed to monitor progress in this respect. FAO is frequently
asked for this information and this study has been produced to provide detailed information about this
topic. It is also hoped that this will help decision makers to understand the importance of the forestry
sector to national economies and livelihoods of forest-dependent people and assist them to develop
forestry policies and make informed investment decisions.

ETFRN News 56 – Towards productive landscapes
Numerous international initiatives and organizations embrace the landscape approach in pursuit of
productive landscapes that provide a wide range of products and ecosystem services and fulfill the

The role of the private sector in REDD+: the case for engagement and options for intervention –
UN-REDD Programme policy brief
The Policy Brief aims to encourage public sector REDD+ planners and practitioners to engage with and
mobilize the private sector through a range of possible interventions. It identifies relevant private sector
actors, and outlines their potential role, in the context of REDD+. This policy brief is also available in
