2016.17 Human Anatomy and Physiology, Quarter 3 Big Ideas/Key Concepts: Anatomy and physiology investigates the interdependence of structure and function to form a living, integrated whole. The nervous and endocrine systems work in an integrative manner to maintain homeostasis and communicate with all other body systems. The cardiovascular system transports materials pumped by the heart through blood vessels to all parts of the body. The lymphatic system bathes the body in extracellular fluid and works with the cardiovascular system to provide immunity and regulate fat metabolism. Standards Student Friendly “I Can” Statements Endocrine System CLE 3251.3.5 Identify the major organs of the endocrine system and the associated hormonal production and regulation. Endocrine System I can name and locate the major endocrine glands and identify additional organ tissues in the human body that produce hormones. I can identify the hormones produced by the endocrine system and describe their physiological effects on other body targets. I can describe the relationship between receptors and differentiate between steroid and nonsteroid hormones. I can explain, using an example, the mechanism of negative feedback in hormonal production and control. Blood CLE 3251.4.1 Identify the molecular and cellular components of the blood and the functions of the blood. Blood I can examine the molecular and cellular constituents of blood (including but not limited to: erythrocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, lymphocytes, and thrombocytes), differentiating their roles in transport, immunity, osmolality, pH balance, or blood clotting. HAP.WCE.7: Analyze blood type groups. I can analyze ABO and Rh blood groups as a basis for blood transfusion and infant incompatibility reactions. Page 1 of 3 Cardiovascular System CLE 3251.4.2 Explore the anatomy of the heart and describe the pathway of blood through the heart. Cardiovascular System I can describe how the anatomy of the heart, vessels, capillaries, and valves create a network (divided into cardiac, pulmonary, and systemic divisions) that functions to continuously circulate blood throughout the body transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cellular wastes. CLE 3251.4.3 Describe the biochemical and physiological nature of heart function. I can explain systole and diastole and describe factors that affect blood pressure. CLE 3251.4.4 Describe the relationship between the structure and function of different types of blood vessels. CLE 3251.4.5 Describe the physiological basis of circulation and blood pressure. CLE 3251.T/E.2 Differentiate among elements of the engineering design cycle: design constraints, model building, testing, evaluating, modifying, and retesting. I can design and build, using the design cycle, an artificial hearth valve to increase and demonstrate depth of understanding of the cardiovascular system. CLE 3251.T/E.3 Explain the relationship between the properties of a material and the use of the material in the application of a technology. I can explain the relationship between the properties of a material and the use of the material in the application of a technology. Respiratory System HAP.WCE.8: Investigate the structures and mechanisms of internal and external respiration. Respiratory System I can describe the structures and functions of the structures within the respiratory system (including but not limited to: nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchial tree, and alveoli) I can explain oxygen transport mechanisms between lungs, blood, and cells of the body considering capillary structures, red blood cell structures, diffusion, and affinity. Honors Addendum Note for Teachers of Honors: Do not teach this Honors Addendum at the end of the quarter. Embed the Honors Addendum within the regular Scope & Sequence. Page 2 of 3 Endocrine System CLE 3251.3.5 Identify the major organs of the endocrine system and the associated hormonal production and regulation. Endocrine System I can research the hormones of the endocrine system, describe their role in regulating the body and communicate this through the use of interactive technology. Cardiovascular System CLE 3251.4.3 Describe the biochemical and physiological nature of heart function. Cardiovascular System I can model the biochemical and physiological events associated with heart contraction, blood pressure, and blood clotting. CLE 3251.4.4 Describe the relationship between the structure and function of different types of blood vessels. I can accurately measure, record and evaluate the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of an individual using a sphygmomanometer. Page 3 of 3
