Biological Engineering Fundamentals
Event Structure:
Participants will work in teams of two. The event will take 50 minutes and will be paper-based.
Descriptions:
This event will test the participants’ knowledge of DNA and protein properties, molecular biology
experimental techniques such as recombinant DNA technology, and the fundamentals of biological
engineering.
Preparation:
Participants will not be provided with any support material during the exam. Topics to study in
preparation for the event are given below.
 amino acids
 properties of DNA and amino acids
 DNA replication, transcription, and translation
 recombinant DNA technology
 bacterial display and phage display
Sample Problems:
1. Draw the structures of Asparagine and Lysine.
2. Describe recombinant DNA technology. Given restriction enzyme and plasmid information,
be able to identify digestions.
