The Five Themes of Geography Theme #1 Location Relative Location Relative Location: is the place where something is in comparison to something else. Absolute Location Absolute Location: is the exact spot on the planet where something resides. Hemispheres Hemispheres: Half of a sphere. Earth has four hemispheres. North, South, East, and West Latitude and Longitude Latitude: Imaginary horizontal lines that start with the equator (0 degrees latitude) used to measure north and south. Longitude: Imaginary vertical lines that start with the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) used to measure east and west. Using latitude and longitude will give you absolute location. Five Themes of Geography Theme #2 Place All places have characteristics that give them meaning and character and distinguish them from other places on earth. Physical Characteristics - places described by landforms or animal life. Example: The craters on the moon Example: The Swallows of Capistrano Human Characteristics - places described by architecture, town planning, land usage, language, religion, and political ideology. Example: Pyramids Example: Mosques The Five Themes of Geography Theme #3: Human/Environment Interaction Where ever humans live on Earth they are forced to interact with the environment. This interaction can be either positive or negative. Positive Interaction - is when human interaction with the environment provides benefits for both the environment and humans. Example: Planting Trees Is a Cowpie a positive interaction? Negative Interaction - when human interaction with the environment provides negative results for the environment and humans. Example: Nuclear Bomb Factory The Five Themes of Geography Theme #4 Movement People interact with other people, places, and things almost every day of their lives. They travel from one place to another; they communicate with each other; and they rely upon products, information, and ideas that come from beyond their immediate environment. Movement - what humans do to communicate, obtain products and information, and share ideas beyond their immediate environment. Gothenburg, NE Where do people from Gothenburg go to get many of the daily products they use? If someone from Gothenburg wanted to get a specialized item where would they go? Lincoln, NE Where would someone from Lincoln try to find an object they could not get in Lincoln? Omaha, NE Where would someone from Omaha go to get something they could not find in Omaha? The Five Themes of Geography Theme#5 Regions Region - a basic unit of geographic study is the region, an area on the earth’s surface that is defined by certain unifying characteristics. The unifying characteristics may be physical, human, or cultural. How regions change over time is also studied and researched. Breaking the world into manageable regions by theme makes studying the world easier. Chuck Norris When Chuck Norris was born, the only person who cried was the doctor. Never slap Chuck Norris.
