Five Themes of Geography Study Guide
Vocabulary:
1. Latitude: Imaginary parallel lines that circle the globe from east to west. Latitude is
measured north(N) or south(S) of the Equator.
2. Longitude: Imaginary meridian lines that run north to south, coming together at the
north and south poles. Longitude is measured east(E) or west(W) of the Prime Meridian.
3. Physical Characteristics: Characteristics that are made by nature.
4. Human Characteristics: Characteristics that are made by humans.
5. Import: To bring goods into a country.
6. Export: To send goods out of a country.
7. Modify: When people change the environment (can be positive or negative).
8. Adapt: When people change because of the environment.
9. Depend: When people rely on the environment.
10. Unifying Characteristics: Characteristics that make a place similar to another place.
11. Environment: Our surroundings.
12. Relationship: How one or more things are connected (related).
13. Culture: Language, religious beliefs, values, customs, and other ways of life shared by a
group of people.
Short Answer:
14. What is the difference between absolute and relative location?
Relative location gives a location based on its relationship to another place (or
landmark). Absolute location gives the exact position on the Earth’s surface (address or
Latitude and Longitude).
15. Give four examples of physical characteristics and human characteristics.
1. Mountains (landforms)
1. Buildings
2. Climate
2. Culture
3. Vegetation
3. Language
4. Bodies of Water
4. Roads
16. With the theme of movement, what three things are considered when explaining
movement?
1. People
2. Ideas
3. Goods
17. Explain how people modify, adapt, and depend on their environment. Give an example
for each.
Modify: People changing the environment (positive or negative). People build roads so it is
easier to travel from place to place. People also pollute their environment.
Adapt: When people change because of their environment. People wear warmer clothes
when the weather turns cold.
Depend: When people rely on their environment. Farmers depend on rainfall, sun light, and
good soil for raising their crops.
18. What questions do the Five Themes of Geography answer?
a. Location: Where is it?
b. Place: What is it like there?
c. Movement: How do people, ideas, and goods move?
d. Human Environmental Interaction: How do people and the environment affect one
another?
e. Regions: What makes a place similar or different from another place?
19. Referring to the theme of Movement, what does the statement “The world is becoming
smaller and smaller.” mean?
Due to the progress of technology people, goods and ideas continue to move faster than
ever. People and goods can travel much faster by airplane that they could by walking or
riding a horse. With the internet, cell phones, and television (satellites) ideas can travel
almost instantaneously around the world.
