Who, What, Where, When, Why, How
Why is movement important?!
Region
• A region - area that is defined by
certain similar characteristics.
Those unifying or similar
characteristics can be physical,
natural, human, or cultural.
Types of Regions
• Geographic or Natural:
landforms, bodies of water,
climatic patterns, presence of
certain resources.
• Political or Cultural: political
trends, religious trends, common
way of life
• Economic: land use, industry
Examples of Regions
• Time Zones
• School Districts
• Areas with shared characteristics
•The South
•The Middle East
•The Bible Belt
•The Bread Basket
•Oceania

Location may be
absolute or it may be
relative.

• Absolute location - latitude and
longitude (global) or a street
address (location).
Examples…
•The Marshall Islands are located
at 10o N and 165o E. (global)
•Sally’s house is located on 44
Vegetable Lane. (local)
•Relative locations - landmarks, time,
direction or distance from one place to
another and may associate one place
with another.

• Bob’s house is located to the west of the
Grand Canyon.
• Cindy works 10 minutes from Bob’s house.

Place
A place - area that is defined
by everything in it. All places
have features that make
them unique.
Example of Place: School
If you refer to your school
as a place, then that place
would include walls, windows,
gym, cafeteria, classrooms,
people, clothing, books,
hallways, and everything else
in the school, including the
languages spoken.
Physical
Characteristics
are characteristics
which appear in nature
ex. Plant and animal life,
