CSCI030
Internet and WWW

People commonly interchange them but they are not
the same concept.

The internet is a global system of networked
computers together with their users and data.

The World Wide Web (WWW) is a software
application that makes it easy and posible for nearly
enyone to publish and browse hypertext documents
on the Internet.
ARPANET,1969




In 1969, Bolt, Beranek and Newman, Inc., (BBN)
designed a network called the Advance Research
Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) for the Unites
States Department of Defense.
Its purpose was to share “super-computing power”.
It was rumored that it was designed to response to the
thread of a nuclear attack that might destroy the
country’s communication system.
The ARPANET later became known as the Internet.
WWW, 1991

The WWW was created by Tim Berners-Lee as
a simple way to publish information and make
it available.

It became available to the public in 1992.

TCP/IP


Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
What do we need a protocol?



To have an standard
Be able to send and receive proper information
Email
Design of Web Pages






Front Page (Microsoft)
Wizard of Microsoft Word
Netscape Composer
Java Script (cookies, pop-ups)
XML
HTML
HTML




.html or htm extensions
You don’t need any special program to create
them just a text editor like notepad and some
knowledge of the language.
Front Page and other tools do most of the job
for you but they also put a lot of unwanted
“information”
It works very well with Java script to do more
advantage features.
What is considered bad for a Web
Page?
Annoying information (pop-ups)
Distracting Information (lots of links, lots of
colors)
Too much and too little
Plain Text
Not be able to know where you are
What is considered good for a Web
Page?





Have always a link to the Home Page
Have a display menu or a table that shows
where you are and what steps you took
Have the same color in all the web site
Don’t have distracting / annoying elements
Nice Visual Presentation

Art Color Theory
Examples

Good Web Page

www.google.com

Why? Very Simple, Not advertising contained, Very
powerful
Examples

Bad Web Page


www.nba.com
www.gwu.edu

Why? Very confusing, very distracting. They contained
very well updated information so the contents are good
but they have a bag design
