The Indonesian Government Networking Status Onno W. Purbo Indonesia Outline Last Minutes Status Report Computer Network Status in Indonesia Aiming to support the Industrial Development in Indonesia. Summary Last Minutes Status Report There will be close to 3 x 2Mbps Internet links from Indonesia in 1996. At least 17 Provinces will be linked through Frame Relay (2Mbps) in 1996 (currently only 4 provinces). At least 2 companies will install a new VSAT backbone for data in early 1996. There will be 4-5 major players in providing the national data backbone. Stressful Burden for Networkers 6-8 Seminars / Workshops / Tutorials per month! Many request for concultancy work mainly coming from Private and Government Owned Industries. Request for training from many universities. The last few weeks is VERY HECTIC for most Indonesian networkers. Not sure how can we sleep in the next months. Trying to create links for approx. 1600 Indonesian Universities with a total of potential users close to 15 Million Users. One-Stop Policy in Indonesia? In its early stage Ministry of Internal Affair is working to build their national 2Mbps backbone ... IT Support Many Computer Hardware & Software Vendor with competitive Prices. IT Consulting Firms: – Anderson Consulting. – McKinsey Indonesia. – IBM – Hewlett Packard Very limited expert in Networking especially TCP/IP & UNIX-based network. Indonesia Telecommunication Infrastructure (1995) Internet access at 640Kbps (will increase to close 6Mbps). 4 Provinces with 2Mbps backbone (will increase to 17 Provinces in 1996). 4-5 Players in Satellite Communication Segment (including VSAT, Point-toPoint). Human Resource Support 100 Computer Collages & Universities. TCP/IP & Networking expert is still very rare. Universities which have the capacity to teach TCP/IP & Networking properly: – Institute of Technology Bandung. – University of Indonesia Suggestions for Government Networking Use InterNet infrastructure Don’t re-invent the wheel. Bottom-Up Community Based Development Approach to sustain the development in the long run. Human Resource Development is the key to success.
