Communication Ways
VERBAL SYMBOLS:
Any communication using words…
…and words only!
NON-VERBAL SYMBOLS:
Communication that uses anything other
than words uses non-verbal symbols.
The Model
What does the receiver do with the message?
The Model of Communication
SENDER: the one who initiates the
message
MESSAGE: the idea the sender is trying to
communicate to the receiver
RECEIVER: the target of the message
FEEDBACK: the response the receiver
gives to the sender
CHANNEL: the means used to transmit the
message from sender to receiver
Types of Channels
• The most common are light, sound, and
touch.
• Why does the communication process
work?
• ENCODING: Turning ideas and feelings into
verbal and non-verbal symbols
• DECODING: Finding the meaning in verbal
and non-verbal symbols.
Interference
Anything that blocks or hinders the message
or feedback from being received.
There are three common types…
1) Physical Noise: Any sound that
prevents clear communication.
2) Psychological Noise: Thoughts or
feelings that distract people from listening.
3) Semantic Noise: Caused by a strong
negative reaction to what the speaker
says.
