Zheng He, in the year between 1405 and 1433, seven large treasure fleets sailed westwards on voyages of trade and exploration. Under the command of Zheng He, the fleets set sail from the South China Sea across the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea, and then traveled further south, discovering the eastern coast of Africa. 1728-1779 James Cook James Cook (1728-1779) was the greatest British navigator. In 1768 he was sent to the Pacific. On his famous second expedition (1772-75) he explored Antarctica. In 1776 he undertook his third and final voyage in which he explored the West coast of North America and tried to locate a passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. On this voyage he discovered the Hawaiian Islands, and sailed up the coast of North America through the Bering Straits to the Arctic Ocean. On his return he was killed by Hawaiian islanders. 1451-1506 Christopher Columbus Italian-born explorer Christopher Columbus broke with tradition in 1492, sailing west in an attempt to find a shorter route to India and China. On August 3rd, 1492, Columbus departed from Palos de la Frontera, Spain, on the first of several voyages to what he later called the “New World.” 1603 – 1659 Abel Janszoon Tasman The discovery of New Zealand --Abel Janszoon Tasman from Holland 1603 – 1659 The first European to discover New Zealand Do you know any other famous navigators in history? Marco Polo (12541324), is probably the most famous Westerner traveled on the Silk Road. His journey through Asia lasted 24 years. He traveled the whole of China and returned to tell the tale, which became the greatest travelogue. Magellan was born about 1470 in Portugal. He set forth his project for a trip round the world on August 10, 1519 and was killed in April 1521 in the Philippines. The voyage Magellan proved that the earth is round.
