Japan underwent rapid economic and military
expansion following WWI
Interest in Chinese land led to attacks on both
China and Russia
United States showed disapproval by pressuring
Japan out of the League of Nations, enforcing a
trade embargo on scrap metal and gasoline, and
closing the Panama Canal to Japanese trade.

The Battle of Midway
On June 4, 1942, a Japanese fleet of over a
hundred ships attacked an American naval
base at Midway Island
Little did the Japanese know, the Americans
had secret weapon: they had intercepted key
messages and broken the Japanese code.
Learning from mistakes in Pearl Harbor,
this intelligence was used VERY
successfully…
Consequences of the Battle of Midway
The battle permanently weakened the
Japanese Navy
The U.S. Navy became able to seize initiative
in Pacific
Had the Japanese captured Midway, the
northeastern Pacific Rim would have been
defenseless
Huge moral boost!

The A-bomb arrives
 President Truman sent a letter to the
Japanese declaring that if they did not
surrender, they would face “prompt and
utter destruction.”
 Japan’s premier wished to accept the
ultimatum, however…
 He was unable to persuade military
leaders to surrender.
