Jeffersonian/Democratic-Republicans American
political party founded in the early 1790s by Thomas
Jefferson
and James Madison. Named after Thomas Jefferson,
and is the political idea supporting a federal government
with limited powers and advocating a strict interpretation
of the U.S. Constitution.
ALEXANDER HAMILTON
•January 11, 1755 or 1757– July 12, 1804
•Founding Father
•First United States Secretary of the Treasury.
• His picture is on the $10.00 bill.
•Believed in paying of the state debts by the
Federal government,
•Believed in creating a national bank
•He favored a system of tariffs
•Friendly trade relations with Britain.
•He helped to write the Jay Treaty,
• He became the leader of the Federalist Party
THOMAS JEFFERSON
•April 13, 1743– July 4, 1826
•A Founding Father
•Author of the Declaration of Independence
•President of the United States from 1801 to 1809
•Co-founder and leader of the DemocraticRepublican Party
•Created the Jeffersonian Democracy, a political
idea supporting a national government, but with
greatly limited powers.
•He advocated for a strict interpretation of the
U.S. Constitution so the national government
couldn’t get too powerful.
•He wanted the states to be able to decide for
their own people, not the federal government
in Washington.
CHARLES PINCKNEY
•October 26, 1757 – October 29, 1824
•Author of the Pinckney Draft 1787 which
was the basis for the Constitution of the
United States.
•Changed his political views to include the
common man
•Became a supporter of Thomas Jefferson
and supported Jefferson for President.
•Government should have 3 parts:
President, Congress and the Supreme
Court.
•Favored individual religious freedom and
protection from government authorities.
•Favored states' rights and a limited
federal government
James Madison, Jr.
•March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836
•Fourth President of the United States (1809–1817).
•He is known as the “Father of the Constitution”. He
played an important part in the writing of the United
States Constitution
•One of the authors of the United States Bill of Rights.
•He was a slaveholder and he inherited his plantation
known as Montpelier.
•He and Alexander Hamilton and John Jay produced
the Federalist Papers (1788).
•Madison changed his political views during his life.
•When the constitution was written, he favored a
strong national government.
•Later he grew to favor stronger state governments.
