Circulatory System Blood Lymphatic System The Heart & Blood flow Superior Aorta Vena Cava Pulmonary Pulmonary Arteries Veins Left Atrium Semilunar Semilunar Valve Valve Bicuspid Right Atrium Valve Tricuspid Valve Left Ventricle Inferior VenaRight Cava Ventricle Septum To Body From Body To Lungs From Lungs To Lungs From Lungs From Body To Body Contraction of Atria Section 37-1 1) Sinoatrial (SA) node Contraction of Ventricles Conducting fibers The 2) Atrioventricular (AV) node Pacemaker System Circuit Pulmonary Circuit Circulatory System • Pulmonary Circulation –Carries blood between the heart and the lungs only • Systemic Circulation –Carries blood between the heart and the rest of the body, except for the lungs Artery Capillary Arteriole Venule Vein Blood Vessels • Arteries: carry O2- & nutrient-rich blood away from the heart to body (arterials-small arteries) • Veins: carry CO2- & waste rich blood back from body towards the heart (venules-small veins) • Capillaries: where nutrients, gases, & wastes are exchanged with the body; located b/w arteries & veins Artery Capillary Vein Valve Smooth Muscle Connective Tissue Epithelium Blood’s Role • Transports raw materials (from digestion) to the cells • Removes waste from cells –Brings wastes to kidneys, lungs, & skin • Maintains a fluid environment for the cells • Protects the body from disease • Keeps body pH stable • Prevents further blood loss Blood Composition Blood Composition • Erythrocytes: RBC’s; carry Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide using hemoglobin (~45% of blood) (circulate up to 120 days) • Leucocytes: WBC’s; body defense (<1% of blood) (circulate under 1 day) • Platelets: involved in clotting (<1% of blood) (circulate 3-8 days) • Plasma: liquid where gases/nutrients are dissolved (~55% of blood) Section 37-2 Plasma Platelets WBC’s RBC’s Lymphatic System • All of our cells are bathed by fluids that diffuse out of the capillaries • This system collects these fluids and proteins and returns them to the blood • Lymph nodes return fluids & proteins to the blood, plus have WBC’s to help protect the body from disease or cancer-causing cells Lymphatic System Circulatory System
