Let’s label the respiratory system!

Respiratory system in the body
What is breathing?



Cup your hands together over your mouth and
feel your breath.
Sit and observe.
Now…stand up and….
Do ten push ups
 Do ten jumping jacks
 Do ten more push ups
 Do ten more jumping jacks

Observation time



Now sit and observe your breathing.
Jot notes down in your journal.
Please share.
Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide



Our body needs oxygen.
Oxygen is brought in
when we inhale.
Carbon dioxide is sent
out when we exhale.
Carbon dioxide





Carbon dioxide is waste
that our body produces.
Carbon dioxide is rid of
when we exhale.
But…what happens to
the carbon dioxide?
Trees and plants need
carbon dioxide to live.
Trees and plants get rid
of oxygen.
What is going on when we breathe






Blood flows from the heart to the alveoli.
Outside the alveoli are capillaries.
Oxygen passes through the capillary wall.
Joins with red blood cells.
At the same time, carbon dioxide passes into the
alveoli and leaves when you breathe out or
exhale.
Oxygen rich blood goes back to heart to be sent
throughout the body.
Alveoli
Cilia


Tiny hairs in the nasal passages, bronchi, and trachea
that help remove or filter, dust and dirt particles.
Cilia help to keep your lungs clean.
Cilia


There are no cilia in your mouth.
Therefore the air that you breathe through your
mouth is not as clean as the air you breathe
through your nose.
Trachea
Let’s label, yea!!!!!!
Diaphragm



Die uh what?
Diaphragm is a large flat muscle under lungs.
When you breathe in, it tightens, or contracts
and moves down.
Diaphragm


When you breathe out, diaphragm and chest
muscles relax.
Diaphragm pushes upward to help force air out
of the lungs.
Diaphragm and breathing
Smoking

Why do you think smoking is bad for you?
Smoke will paralyze the cilia and they won’t be able
to filter dust and dirt.
 Eventually the cilia will be destroyed.
 Tar coats the bronchi and makes it harder for
oxygen to pass.

Smoking
Lung of non smoker on left and lung of smoker on the right
Cancer
So…..

What are the effects of smoking?

What will you spend your money on if you don’t
buy cigarettes?
Exercise


What can exercise do for your respiratory
system?
Exercise will….
Increase your lung capacity.
 Make your diaphragm and muscles around lungs
stronger.
