Where does the Carbon Dioxide come from? We make Carbon Dioxide in our body when we make energy How does your body know when to breathe? When there is too much carbon dioxide, it makes you breath to remove the poisonous CO2. Carbon dioxide blocks Oxygen from traveling on the RBC’s. If we can’t exhale we can’t make energy Blood Vessels- Tubes that carry blood – capillaries, arteries and veins Arteries Carry blood away from the heart Muscle Veins Carry blood to the heart Valve Capillaries Smallest vessels that allow oxygen & CO2 to pass in & out Respiratory System – gas exchange The Path of Air: •Enters the mouth or nose •To the pharynx past the larynx (voice box) & into the trachea (windpipe) •The trachea splits into 2 bronchi • Bronchi split off into several bronchioles Blood cells with Oxygen • At the end of each bronchiole there is an air sac Capillaries Trachea Bronchioles Alveoli Oxygen in CO2 out Blood cells with CO2 The air sac is made up of several alveoli The alveoli have capillaries around them Why would the alveoli have capillaries around them? Gas can pass through the walls of the capillaries exchanging Carbon Dioxide for Oxygen At what point do the Respiratory and Circulatory Systems interact? Asthma - respiratory disease in which certain airways in the lungs become constricted Bronchitis – mucous fills the bronchioles does not allow as much air to pass through Emphysema – alveoli lose elasticity Pneumonia – alveoli fill with liquid (pus, mucous etc) Skeletal System—Support, Protect, and produce red blood cells Types of Joints: 1. Ball and Socket 2. Hinge 3. Gliding 4. Immovable 5. Pivot Ligaments—attach Bone to Bone Tommy John Surgery….what do you think? Tendons— connect muscle to bone Skeletal and Muscular System Disorders Open Heart Surgery Video! Angioplasty—Alternative for some heart patients! Respiratory System • Steven Tyler—Ultimate Human Machine • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MDn5 GgyxyU Need to Know… Muscle system – movement Skeletal system – protection, support, & makes red blood cells - A joint is the point where 2 or more bones meet - A sprain is when ligaments are stretched to far - Know what osteoporosis is and how it can be prevented - Skeletal, Smooth and Cardiac are the 3 types of muscle know where they are each located and their function Need to Know… Circulatory system – delivery of materials Respiratory system – gas exchange - Arteries carry blood away from the heart - Veins carry blood to the heart - Capillaries are small vessels in between arteries and veins that allow for gas exchange - Capillaries and alveoli is where the circulatory and the respiratory systems connect - Cardiovascular disease is when coronary arteries are blocked. - To prevent cardiovascular disease: don’t smoke, don’t eat foods high in fat and cholesterol - Your body forces you to take a breath when there is a lot of Carbon Dioxide in your blood. - More than 90% of lung cancer patients are/were smokers - Know what about asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, bronchitis - Know the function of a R.B.C. Nervous System • Hard Hit Current Science • Neuron structure by Khan academy • Sport science on concussions • Avera’s concussion program
